I would like to thank Norman and Carol Hipps for all the help they gave me at the show in Winston Salem this past weekend, This was the first show I've ever been to and you can guess how little I know about quility birds. They took the time to explain some of the finer points in choosing chicken show stock and with their help I was able to get a nice pair of LF RIR's. They were showing some Naked Necks, Polish, and Black Orpingtons some real eye candy, and I can tell you, they did very well in the awards catagory. Thank you! thank you.
BHep - I am hoping if I can convince DH to let me go to go to the show!! It would be my FIRST show...ever!! I will have to keep you posted, so if I do go, we can meet up and say hi!! I just read about your loss and I am sending as many hugs
as I can your way, especially to the dear little ones who feel so terrible!!
This was indeed a hard lesson for them to learn!!
My first attempt at thanksgiving was a success, I think!! Aside from my MIL commenting repeatedly, "Oh wow, this is actually pretty good!" (as IF my cooking is bad??) we had surprisingly few leftovers...well aside from the turkey!! I didn't know you could give the carcass to the chickens, so I may pull it out of my freezer (YAY I may actually have room for something now) and give it to them later on today!!
I am sure they would like that. Does it matter that I brined it in brown sugar and oranges?? Yesterday I made wild rice & turkey chowder and today I am making turkey noodle soup...in another day or two, I am going to loathe turkey!!
Had a great visit with the in-laws, although the MIL did MAKE ME go out shopping on Black Friday for....FABRIC of all things!! (I know I really wasn't THAT sad about fabric shopping). The bad news...we waited in line for TWO HOURS to get fabric cut!! DD was SOOOOO good, we had people stopping by us to comment on how well behaved she was. It made this mama proud!!
For all the horror stories you hear about BF, we had a great experience. One lady was walking around the store handing out coupons that she had extra of, and as we were checking out the lady in front of us handed us her coupons that she didn't use!! Talk about nice!! In all, we amassed 3 - 50% off coupons, 1-40% off coupon and a 25% off your entire order coupon!! Not bad for running to the store to get materials for MIL to make a covering for our Moses basket she made for the new baby!! Just so you all don't worry, I have been taking it easy. DH handled lifting the turkey, MIL & FIL handled lifting DD, so all I really did was cook and sew. Finished the baby quilt I wanted to get done before they left AND managed to make several baby shower gifts too!! My agenda for today is to get caught up on laundry and <sigh> get the kitchen back into order!! I also plan to start another quilt!! I made one for DD's birth, so I am thinking positively and therefore I will make one for this little guy/girl!! Only 3 more weeks and we find out if there has been any improvement!!
VFem - any news on job offers for DH?? Congratulations on selling out of some jam!! That is always good!! I may have to pop back over there and see what flavors are left...DH LOVED your jam - I didn't get any...he ate it all!!
I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving!! I am truly thankful for each and everyone of you!!
Edited to ask: Is it normal for a chicken to run/walk around with her "tail" down? All of my chickens have their tails held high but I just noticed one of my girls has her tail down. Is this normal? I haven't noticed if this is a trait of hers or not, so I just wanted to make sure. Have any of you heard/seen anything like this before?? If it is bad, what do I do? Thank you in advance!!

A down tail can be a sign of not feeling well. I would catch the hen and give her a good going over. It may be nothing more then a bad case of worms, but you really need to check her.
