RF and I are licensed wildlife rehabers. One thing they always stressed was deer and birds of prey require a federal license to rehab and you get inspected every year. Since we really don't have the area to dedicate to caging birds of prey or deer we passed on that license. Sounds like you are going to have an interesting time!!!!!

As for loose dogs, had law officer tell me that here in Cumberland County, any dog entering my property can be shot and especially if it acts in a threatening manner. I think most all counties have that policy but you can check to be sure. I usually don't have much of a dog problem......more of a neighbor who likes eating chicken problem....and he isn't a teen

ML - I have NO idea why you were purple like me, but I LIKE IT!! :) You can replace white flour with whole-wheat flour cup for cup. For every cup you exchange, add five teaspoons of water. Add additional flour only when needed while shaping. If you are making bread with 100 percent whole-wheat flour, add two teaspoons of vital wheat gluten per cup to create a stronger structure and higher rise. For each teaspoon of wheat gluten you use, add another one and a quarter teaspoons of water. If using 100 percent whole-wheat flour, allow the dough to rise in volume by just one and a half times, as opposed to the typical two times. The same can be said for Quinoa flour and buckwheat, however almond and rice flour tend to be an "acceptable" white flour substitute. Rice flour does NOT rise very well and thus you will need to add the vital wheat gluten (if you do not have issues with gluten) or something else (I don't know what as I just use the vital wheat gluten) to give it some "fluff". Do know that it will always be heavier than traditional white bread and usually heavier than most store bought wheat bread. Feel free to experiment and use a variety of combinations. I LOVE King Arthur flours and they have a wonderful website filled with recipes, tips and even a bakery hotline to assist you should you have issues with your baking!! They also sell whole wheat BREAD flour as well as other flours - pastry, cake, oat, almond, etc... I am a big KA flour nut!! If you want to check them out the website is: http://www.kingarthurflour.com/ I hope this helps!! :)

Good Morning everyone!! I have been up before the roosters, so I don't know if that is a good thing or not, but oh well. I have been spending the morning researching gardening...DH was told yesterday at work that we could plant some of our garden atop the leach bed and I find this disturbing - thus the research. I can understand flowers being planted there, but vegetables? How would one prevent the contaminated water from contaminating the crops? Have any of you gardeners heard of that?? I've also been researching fencing companies as we are still looking into fencing our property so we can get a few sheep. I made DH some lamb (a rare treat for him because of the cost!!) last night and all he's talked about since was the fact that we'd have extra lamb if we had dairy sheep because "you know they have to be pregnant and have a lamb in order to produce milk and we'd need to do something with the lamb so it doesn't drink all the milk" - you see where his focus is!! On a funny note, when I ordered trees a while back...I didn't check to see if I was ordering dwarf trees or standard trees...seems we may run out of room in our orchard as 7 of the 10 trees are semi-dwarf, 2 are standard size and 1 (the poor fig tree) is unknown!! HAHA...oops!! I hope everyone has a great day!!

Good Morning everyone....

I am up but certainly not awake this morning. I need some coffee, but will wait as not to wake everyone up. I enjoy my morning peace as long as possible.
Certainly is a nice change to the weather this AM. I like to open the window a crack in my office, so I can be serenaded.

It is actually warm-ish out. I am hoping for the sunshine that the weather forecast promised. Need to dry up this mud.

I gave my little bantam hen 5 eggs last night. Usually her sisters join in the brooding

I have several more eggs destined to the pot if not. Not that I couldn't come up with more, I just like them to hatch as close together as possible.

Thanks for the info NH, now i have a question, if you can't process an extra roo, how in the world do you think you could process a lamb? Now That would be hard.

See...the beautiful thing about that is DH plans to invite our friends over...they're real farmers (unlike us wannabes) and have processed their own chickens, goats, cows, and whatever they have managed to take down hunting!! He figured we could have a processing party where they do the work (okay, show him how to do the work) and take some of the parts with them.

He's a dreamer, I know...but I let him dream! I almost have him convinced to let me have some ducks so I am not about to interfere with those dreams of his!! Baby steps...must work with the city boy one baby step at a time!! hehe. All I know is the lamb would have to be taken care of when I was NOT around because those things are just so stinking cute, I'd probably pass out from crying/blubbering so hard!! Did I mention I don't like eating lamb?? Hard doesn't even begin to describe it, IMHO!!

I am with you there can't eat veal either or is lamb veal? i don't know but whatever baby calves are..

First of all, I don't eat any baby animals! Have never tried, don't plan of it, just can't get past it. But, I am here to ask if I can PLEASE put my babies outside?? We have 1 12 week old and 4 8-9 week olds, all feathered out and living in a large dog kennel in my guest bedroom!! DH says they have to be at least 12 weeks old, but I am done with them4 living inside!! Their awaiting home is a cute little coop with a small yard, surrounded with a nice fence. At present, there is not a heat lamp, but if it means I can put them out, I will rig one up!! As you know, the weather this week is very mild. So, please...............can I boot them out!?!?!?!?

YES.... Send those stinky little cuties out. I have some the same age... Outside with a 75 watt reptile heat lamp (the blueish light) at night only.

Not worries NH! I have some of my beds over the leech field, its more a concern about damage roots can do to the pipes rather then contamination issues. The root systems of the plants and the grass and the septic filter system itself is WONDERFUL. That in itself takes care of most contaminates. Contamination usually occurs when the plant has had direct contact on the leaf/blossom/fruit area of the plant. So you are more then safe. Just be careful that deep rooting systems on a plant (shrubs, trees, even some tomatoes) are strong and go DEEP... they can cause damage to pipes.

They are outside!!! Now, wonder if I can get that kennel out by myself.......hmmmm. May not tell DH right away that they have been exicted!! He will worry himself sick since he is not here to watch over them!! I do appreciate BYC peeps, you guys rock! I may not post often, but I read NC posts everyday!

PS: Shelia has the hiccups all the time, anyone else have a hiccuping chicken?
