Welcome Lavmom, happy to have you join us! I haven't been here all that long either, but I love it!! Lots of great chicken people, with lots of experience, and they are always happy to answer any questions you may have. Where do you live in NC?

Most of my first hens were bought at the WCA! I have between 25-30 chickens now, though half of them are young pullets and cockerals. I have 1 buff orpington rooster and several "big girls" of different and mixed breeds!

I didn't make it to the auction last Sunday, but here's what I plan to take this Sunday if the weather isn't horrible. If anyone's interested in something I have, I'm open to trades, too!

-One fancy white crested black Polish hen. She won second at the fair last year and I bought her there. She's the only Polish I have, though, and would fit in much better with other Polish.

-hatching runner duck eggs

-a pair or trio of 12 week old white leghorns

-a chunky easter egger hen. Seems to be "jealous" and sometimes goes after other hens that the rooster breeds. Lays beautiful blue eggs, but not very often.

Thanks Alex, double thanks! (hahaha... dumb pun)

Those eggs got wiped out fast. I've been baking like crazy since Saturday and we've had eggs everyday one was or another. There are like 6 eggs left! hahaha

I hope you got my invite too, I'll be doing a little gardening camp/outing/class thing 2/25 for most of the day. Going to try to cover everything people need to get started with to get a gardening going, then for fun talk about compost, pruning, rooting, bulbs, native flower options... ect. Serving coffee/tea and some of my baked goods. Should be fun!

vfem, I'm so sorry! I'll be out your way this Sunday if you need anything.

So it looks like I'm getting a few DUCKS!!! I blame Bhep! Its ALL her fault for letting me have some eggs....now I NEED them for baking. LOL

Beth, I don't know if I sent you an invite for it or not. I sent out a bunch here and on facebook and I lost track! :P

Hi Debbie. Yes Hampstead is not too far away at all. Thanks for the info about selling your eggs. That sounds just like how I would do it myself. But I hadn't thought about them paying ahead of time but that is a good idea too. So if you are getting plenty of eggs with 10 hens, I guess I will do ok with 27 huh?

We are really looking forward to them and this whole new adventure. It's funny how many chicken things I have seen lately and love it now. I bet I'll have some "chicken decor" in my house before long. haha. Oh well, its a good thing I decorate primitive country so it should fit in fine.

Shannon, glad you liked the eggs. I'll post pictures when I get everything planted the way I want. I didn't get an invite but we aren't FB friends yet....I sent you a request. I'm actually off the 25th so I should be able to come!!

My WCA list for this week:
-Cuckoo Marans hen
-2 Delaware hens
-handful of delaware, EE, and mixed roosters.
-I MIGHT be able to dig up a young Delaware trio if anyone is interested.

Guess I need to update my "flock" list as we have added several more chickens! We have 16 hens, but not all are laying yet. Actually, only about 4 are laying. But I still get 2 to 4 eggs a day. That doesn't sound like much, but I don't eat eggs unless they are boiled or deviled, and my husband is working out of town. So, all my eggs go into cartons, and when it gets full, I just take it into work. First come first served!! We will be hatching some in a month or so, and hope to get lots of hens then!! Most of all, they are just fun!!
