North Carolina

you'll know when you have a broody NH, she will growl and puff her feathers all out and may even nip you hard if you try to look under her or even think about taking her eggs. I have my first broody of the year, a lil Bantam sitting on 3 eggs. and she looks like a pan cake sitting on her nest, she'll let me pet her but she always growls at me when I first come up to her. they are so precious, I also got 4 EE chicks today from Kristan B, she is a newbie on NC thread but lives in my Co. and She was nice enough to sell me 4 of her 15 that she bought, I have always wanted EE's they are adorable..

I so wanted to have a broody, not a sneaky hen who is just hiding eggs on me!! BOO!! LOL Thank you for the advice though!! :)

We have a .22 but if I were to choose one I'd go for a shot gun since you don't have to be real accurate to hit your target. We had a dog attack back in October and my DH hit it twice with a .22 and it went on to kill the neighbors pigs and 10 of her chickens while hopping around on 3 legs. Hope you're able to solve your problem without any losses to your flock

I love dogs but after a problem some years back with a neighbors husky I learned to shoot the dog. i had the sheriff deputy out and he told me to shoot the dog. I had him go over and let that neighbor know that it was legal for me to do it and I would be if the dog came here again. I don't play.......I kept the 30-30 loaded......one shot will end all misery. It was bad enough the dog was coming here and killing the chickens and attacking the geese but when it went after the horse my daughter was riding and nearly got her thrown, I had enough. Most often the police do NOT want to deal with it.....you shoot it. Hate doing that but the dog owner does not care enough about the dog to take care of it properly and it will get hit on the road or suffer some other way.

NH.....as for extra eggs......did you know you can freeze them for when the chickens quit laying or you worm them and have no eggs to eat? You have to take them out of the shell and I mix the yolk into the white before freezing. They very usable when thawed.........great for baking.

We don't play around with the dogs either. It was actually only luck that we were out that night to see the dog attacking our birds. The only problem with where our coop is, is that its like 700ft away and it was 2am so he shot it the best he could. Not to mention that at night out here its very dark since we live in the sticks. We ended up talking to the owner and he shot the dog. Now the other dog we're having problems with the owner refuses to believe its their dog even tho I've caught it going after my chickens (I just need to remember when I go out to check on my birds to take my gun with me). Oh well, we do the best we can to protect our flock.

Have you eaten the eggs that you've frozen as just scrambled eggs?

You can do them as scrambled, omelets or even fried egg sandwiches and of course for baking

We are rural too.....nothing across the road from us.........neighbors not all that close on either side and we love it. Good country living and everyone gets along to gether well. The dog was from a grown daughter of a neighbor who was visiting for several weeks.........she left quick enough and the neighbor was not unhappy about that.

Good Gosh, what you people have done to me! Now I'm having chicken dreams!

Hubby and I have been planning to expand the poultry by converting one sheep shed and associated small pastures to chickens. We had also planned to add another breed, and possibly two, into the venture. I had researched and chosen what I wanted. Then came the dreams.

When we bought this place some years back, I researched what I wanted, and got Buff Orpingtons. After a few years, I got tired of bland colors, and kept trying to incorporate other breeds. Aside from three individual birds, one white cochin, one speckled Sussex and one Comet, who made pets of themselves, all the other birds have been gotten rid of. I never liked any other breed I tried. After several tries, I ended up adding color by getting other colors of Orpingtons. In my dream, I went back through all the frustration of dealing with other breeds, and deciding I didn't like them after all.

Hubby was still up arguing with all those people on the computer who are Wrong, so we had a chicken discussion. The upshot is, we're going to use that space to expand the Orps, and separate my colors better. Maybe we'll change our minds later, but that dream was very vivid. And the frustrations of the past were brought back pretty hard.

Chicken dreams. Whodathunk?
