North Carolina

I have had broodies that I picked up and took eggs from, seen them shuffling around, picked up again and more eggs. ??????????
Yup holding them under their wings or something. HAHAhahhaaaa

Thanks, SOS, Marlow and Luke, I am currently saving for a pistol, and I call both animal control and the sheriff everytime! My neighbors are in law suit with the, because the dogs killed a newborn foal. I talked to the wife, who is very sweet, and she gave 40$ for damages. I was thankful, I honestly don't want the money, I'd much rather them take care of their dogs.

I just hope they don't cancel at the last minute. I don't have their phone number, would you be able to keep me posted if you hear if it gets canceled?
the number i got from the craigslist ad is (919)291-6516, not sure if I want to sit in the car for an hour to get there so I might skip it!
City ChickenChick: I might have some EE's I could part with, how many are you looking for?

I haven't been shooting in a while and could use some target practice with my new .22 =)

I prefer a rifle, pistols you have to get a little too close, a rifle you can be quite a distance and if you have a clean field of view and a slight downward angle (to account for where the bullet goes if you miss) you can take the shot. Also rifles are much cheaper. a .22 rifle is a chicken owner's best friend.

Wildriverswolf90, I'm so sorry that happened! How heartbreaking, and they also killed your neighbor's foal? That is devastating. I'm expecting a little goat kid any day now, and I can't imagine how sad it would be to lose it to roaming dogs. I've lost some of my favorite chickens to loose dogs, and it is infuriating!

besides what you mentioned - nothing. Trust me I know personally - besides a dog who hates them, shooting them, catching and getting rid of them, shooing them off, or fencing them OUT of your chicken yard - theres no way to get rid of them.

x2

I had a guniea problem that lasted 5 years. they supposedly go "walk about" and can travel miles. I didn't have chickens when they first showed up years ago-- a flock of 18-- and scared the horse out of their minds for weeks. the colt finally thought it was fun to chase them and they would fly out of the paddocks. Put up with them until I got going with the chickens. At first they just passed through but last fall they started spending the night and roosting over the pens and pooping on my birds. By this time they were down to three birds. I managed to catch 2 of them and took them to WCA. the third just wasn't going to be caught in any of my many jurty-rigged traps. It met its demise by way of a freind with a BIG shot gun. Fencing them out doesn't work they fly well and think nothing of fences.

Sorry Miss Lydia, it was NOT me chasing the ball, nor DD but the chickens. You'd think they'd have learned by now that the giant blue thing is NOT something they can eat!!

I am on it!! Never thought of boiling up everything...I thought I had to scramble them or something and was NOT interested in doing that. I am happy to hear that I don't have to do much...although, I guess I need to invest in a potato masher!!

Had my doctor's appointment today. I am measuring small (nothing new...I had a small baby #1) and have consistently had low platelet counts, so they rechecked my blood...BUT, I am all set to go on 3/27....you just keep praying for that day!! LOL...my mother likes that day as well and DH says it's OK, he'd prefer 4/1!! I'm sure DoubleA will be happy as our sewing class will not interfere with that and she will not be forced to break in her labor kit!!

You just made my day RF!! I don't know if this girl is going broody or not, but it is definitely a "new" thing happening in the coop!! Last night whomever had 6 eggs buried under the shaving and I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for a sole egg in the back that I scooped out and in doing so disturbed the "nest". Perhaps I will find someone sitting in a box sometime soon!! If not, I will just hope one day I walk in to the sound of chicks!!

you'll know when you have a broody NH, she will growl and puff her feathers all out and may even nip you hard if you try to look under her or even think about taking her eggs. I have my first broody of the year, a lil Bantam sitting on 3 eggs. and she looks like a pan cake sitting on her nest, she'll let me pet her but she always growls at me when I first come up to her. they are so precious, I also got 4 EE chicks today from Kristan B, she is a newbie on NC thread but lives in my Co. and She was nice enough to sell me 4 of her 15 that she bought, I have always wanted EE's they are adorable..

Can't believe how close you are to hatching your baby, so exciting!!

Thanks for the tip on the .22, I just assumed rifles were for expensive. Luke- you are welcome to come target practice here!
I love dogs so much and it breaks my heart to think about killing them, but if they kill my chickens my feelings will change!
