Was at the vet's this morning taking the new kitten in to be seen, check out and given shots. No shots as she has a URI and a fever (boo) but we were FeLV & FIV negative, fleas/mites negative and only positive for round worms. Got some meds for her and her 1.1 pound body and they want to see her again in 2 weeks for shots. LOL, I told them I may or may not be able to make my appointment. Funny thing is...3 of the ladies working in the office were pregnant too!! Glad they understood!!
On a HORRIBLE chicken note...I was loading up to leave this morning and saw the end result of an attempted hawk attack!!

Jeremy fluffed himself up and ran after that hawk like the big man on campus that he is...first time I have seen him actually confront something. The funniest part is the hawk was literally 1/2 the size of the chickens, so I can't imagine HOW it thought it would be able to get away with one. Anyway, this will be the LAST time I let the chickens out extra early - not that it will make a difference in the possibility of a hawk attack, but just because it will make me feel a little better to be able to watch and check on them while it's bright and sunny out.

On a GREAT chicken note...Olivia is still sitting in her nesting box!! Today is day 3 of her sitting on 4 eggs that I know of...it could even have been more, so we'll find out if she sticks with it...when the biddies arrive. Will I need to separate her from the rest of the flock if she does manage to hatch, or will they be okay the way they are? I don't even want to think about the hawk incident and the babies...I know there's a possibility, but I refuse to think about that right now...because we have no babies and if/when we get babies, I may choose to remain in denial, I don't know.

Can ducks and chickens live together? My kids have been wanting a duck since we saw some when we were getting our chicks. My DH has told them we will think about it. I know we are planning on expanding our chicken housing and I think if the ducks had to be housed seperately we could work something out to have them seperate too. I just am not sure what all ducks would need other than access to water to swim in. So those with ducks and chickens how do you house them? Duck experts what all is required to care for ducks?

They CAN live together.... I don't advise it. Share a run yes. Chickens roost, ducks don't so they will get pooped on or laying in poop etc.
Ducks need water, even a low sided tote. I use a cement mixing tub from lowes. They are messy but I LOVe mine !!

Thank you for your reply. I am just trying to figure out accomodations before we jump into ducks. We got 2 ducklings a few years back but got rid of them when we realized they wouldn't work out where we were living at the time. We may just stick to our chickens for now too.

We actually do keep ducks and chickens together successfully, but we have a very large run. The ducks stay out all night and the chickens roost in the coop. Strangely, though, for the last two days I've found a duck egg IN my coop IN my nestbox with chicken eggs....That has me stumped..

My goofy chickens roost on top of their coop, rather than in it. But since they are in an enclosed pen we don't worry about it. I was thinking we could have a small house for the ducks to sleep in within the chicken pen. We woudn't be getting but 2-3 ducks anyway if we get them so I think that low of a number would be fine with the chickens as long as they have a water source. Any other opinions are welcome as well. I appreciate all the opinions/advice shared so far.
