What are you looking for????  fully grown or chicks......
half grown or tiny/fuzzies?????  breed.....hen....roos?????
I'm sure several of us could help you along :gig

Good question.. And I've been thinking about it alot lately.. I think I'd like to add one or two that have just started or are close to starting to lay eggs. Definately large enough I can put them in with the big ladies once they are done with quarantine.

I'd love to add some color to my flock which ATM is mostly red. Maybe a white or blue would be nice. I'd love a Cochin or Orpington (cause they are fat), but seeing the prices on Craigslist is killing me! I'd really like to pay no more than $10 a bird, so obviously I'm not needing show quality. Just a good layer of large eggs. My remaining EEer chicken has medium sized blue ones and they just look funny next to the big one from my RIRs to me! LOL

A silkie would be fun too cause they are funny looking! I'm sure both my kids would love having one of those to chase and cuddle!

I also love the look of the lace wyandottes! Oh so pretty!

There are just so may great choices how can I choose just one!!!

And definately NO ROOS! My pregnant neighbor would kill me I think!

I can totally see your opinion as valid and true, but I guess it also depends on the type of farm you have and how it is run. If your animals aren't ever ment to be on the dinner table and you grow attached to them as pets, I think it can be a hard thing to deal with. I personally have never lived on a farm or owned one, but my dad grew up on one and he has more than once told me his great, although sometimes gruesome, stories. Death on a farm is definately a more prominent fact of life that is for sure.
As for us personally, we only have a little house with a decent back yard, so I guess we are true to the site name, Backyardchicken...owners. LOL Our chickens are our pets, and as we have never had to deal with losing a pet before it was a bit of a trying experience all around. Me coming upon the chicken(and not knowing what to do), knowing it was my fault it happened and that my dog had done it, and having to explain what happened to the kids in away they would understand.
As unfortunate as it is, this incident has given me the opportunity to instill in my kids the fact that things like this happen. And even though they are pets in the fact that we have no plans on eating them and they have names, they are still just chickens ment for eggs so if something happens its not a huge deal, although it is sad that it happens. I'm glad they have learned this and are taking it so well.
On a lighter note, now how bout that chicken Math? Anyone wanna help me out with it?.. Currently I seem to be failing!

I eat the extra roos, never seem to be enough homes for them but I do have pet ones with and without names.
I had to put my 9 yr old sumatra roo down early last spring, it killed me, I have never cried killing a rooster, but I did on him.

They come in other colors???????

Jon, I have 2 barred rock hens that are right at a year old for sale. They are very friendly and lay everyday. I'll also have some Cuckoo Marans chicks for sale in about a month.

See, see.........that is exactly how it starts!!!! So many pretty birds!! And, then before you know it.........chickens everywhere!!! Let the madness begin!!

but i am looking for hens about to start or in a couple of weeks.. trying to get some arount the same age as the ones i have now! For ease of them joining the flock and so my originals dont get picked on. I am down three since i have started only because i cannot have roosters.

Geez.....go away for a weekend and come back to 81 posts to get through! Musta rained while I was gone, so you were all stuck indoors!

I had a great time at Maryland Sheep and Wool, and when I got home I found that hubby had done a lot of work on the sheepshed-to-chickenhouse conversion.

The front wall is now there, the windows are in, and one gate is up. Still a lot to go, but far less than there was! My son and his girlfriend will visit next weekend. Maybe we can draft him to help; he likes manual labor! When we get done I'll take pics.
