Hi, glad to meet you.. Now tell us all about your chickens etc.

Well, I'm totally new to chickens. I got my first six from TSC on April 9th. They have been so much fun. Went to let the out of their temp. home yesterday and five of the six had huge red blisters filled with blood where their ear lobes were. I think the one that didn't have this is the one who did it to the others....Took that mean one out. Hopefully it's a wound and not somekind of disease.

Not sure I want to leave hubby alone with the livestock anymore.

I'm missing one of my broodies, and half the babies that were with the three broodies. I may be missing a second broody, too. And he tossed one of the black chicks in with the BCM chicks, without tagging it.

I don't know what went on this weekend while I was gone, but when he gets home from work, he's getting interrogated.

I've got another trip planned in late June. Dare I go?

Oh, and my turkey eggs that were due to hatch while I was gone didn't. Nothing. There were a couple clears, which I pulled, but there shoulda been a half dozen turkey poults greeting me when I got home.

Grump, grump, grump......

I 100% agree. I feel like my emotions are very situational. I've worked at a couple zoos, so animals come and go for various reasons. I love them all, but it never upsets me like my own pets. I take it as part of the job. Another part of my job is cutting up baby chicks and mice and skinning them...doesn't bother me too much. Then I see a dead field mouse that got traped in a pipe and it upsets me....go figure. I've discussed having to thin the chicken flock in the future with my boyfriend.  Right now I only have 2 so it probably wouldn't be for another few years. But this "chicken math" is a reality and I feel we, as a couple, should be prepared to make the decision. I feel like I'd be okay with it*, just take it as part of the job. But if a racoon got in and killed them, or they got sick-I would probably be upset. So odd.

So the * is an exception for my first two chickens, who still don't have names, who I figure I would never be able to kill because they are my first two chickens ever. Right now they are big white chicken and little black chicken, but I guess if I plan on keeping them forever at least they should get names. Do you guys name your chickens?

Yep! We have Dora, Sweetie, and Sour Puss.. Dot was the one who dies. They were all distinguishable. I think if they all looked alike we wouldn't have named them.

Hopefully not, maybe they just needed more room, they don't do well when in close quaters. you may try putting some triple antibiotic ointment on it. Let us know how they are in a few days. But don't get scared an run out for antibiotics not a good thing to treat with unless you know what your treating. pics of injuries would be good too. Lots of very helpful folks here.

All my original chickens have names, now that we've added EE's to the mix they are just called the EE's or the girls since they are all pullets. The ones that have hatched this year so far are nameless, waiting to see if some will be named going to freezer before actually naming.
