Okay, I called him to see what he'd like.  He wants Buff Orpingtons and Austrolorps and that's it.  He also said he's changed his mind about when he's starting up the incubator, since he's planning an 80th birthday party for Mom early June.  He doesn't want to start eggs until after.  So....planning ahead now...I can take him eggs when I go down June 3rd.  If anyone has Austrolorps or BOs, and can save me some about that time, please let me know.

I love my dad, but he can change his mind faster than anyone I know.  A month ago he was going to start eggs now, and wanted a mix.

In other news, the sheepshed/chickenhouse conversion is coming along nicely.  It started out as an 8 x 20 three-sided lean-to.  Then we added another 8 x 20 section of roofing, but no sides, since it was in an area with few trees and it got hot out there.  So that's what the sheep had.  Total of 16 x 20 feet.  So far, in the conversion, the front open side has been walled off, and two windows installed in the back wall.  The open 8 ft sections on the sides will stay open for ventilation, but be fenced in.  It's getting divided down the center to make it two 10 x 16 houses, and each will feed into a different pasture area.  The doors are in now, and the framework for the fencing is going up.  Hubby was trying to work out of stash for the treated wood parts, but is short, so had to go get one more board.  The upright wall pieces are rough-cut lumber though, as was the original sheepshed.  So the base of the henhouse will be done this weekend, then it just needs to be outfitted with perches and nest boxes, and have water run down to it....in some fashion that the puppy can't eat the hose so readily.  He likes hoses.  :he   Then I can finally get my flock separated up!  Yay!

Tours? Us? We're just a little homestead and are nothing special at all. Visitors are always welcome, but it's certainly not a place to tour!

Hey! You're in Lumberton! You are certainly close enough to come for a visit. When that new henhouse is finished, would you like to see it? Hubby does a really great nestbox set-up, making it easy to clean out, with hinged drop-fronts on them. But I'll say up front that there are a lot of folks who do things better than we do. Still, I love seeing how everyone does things and get different ideas from everywhere. I always assume that everyone else likes to see how others do things, too.

My daily egg count is really taking a major hit. I have broodies everywhere and more walking around clucking that are about to go broody. NONE of the broodies are on eggs. I have some Marans eggs in the bator I plan to give to Daisy when they start to hatch, but that is it. All the broodies are driving me crazy. I clear birds out of nests a few times a day. Then each night I make sure all the ladies are in a coop and not in one of the outside nests. Don't want a possum having one of my girls as a snack in the middle of the night.

Jealous. ;) Send some of that broodiness my way. My bator is Full and I'd love for some of the girls to sit their fluffy butts down on my extra eggs!

UGH! Went out this morning and fed all the meat birds. Everyone running around happy and healthy, eating grass in the new tractor coop. Totally thrills to get some fresh water (they kill a gallon a day easy!).

Then after work I got out to bring them some treats (yes, I will spoil them so they die fat AND happy!), and one of the hens is dead?! No runny poo, full crop, still warm even. I have no idea how she went from super active and great this morning, and 4 hours later after work dead?!

Do meat birds just dropped dead for no reason? I hear they are prone to leg issues do to weight, but could she have suffered a heart issue because of their growth?

I'm concerned because its just too random, and I don't want to lose risking anymore meat birds. I only have 5 left and to make this worth time and effort, I need the rest to pull through for at least 2-3 more weeks!

From my understanding and experience when my aunt & uncle raised them yes they are known to die suddenly from organ failure especially heart issues due to the strain on their body from their rapid growth...
