I think my niece wants to come to the auction tomorrow, since hubby leaves on a business trip in the morning. I won't bring anything, but will keep my eye out for a few things.

Hubby is trying to finish the chicken house before he leaves; at least to the point the teenagers can move in. I think he can do it. We've got to alter the fences before the adults come down and the teens get released. But we'll cover the nest boxes and make sure the teens are sleeping on the perches before we bring the adults and open the nest boxes. I hate it when they start sleeping in...and pooping in...my nest boxes!! And that will give these teens the "home-ground advantage" when we bring the adults in!

The other mastiff, Molly, visited today. She's a nice girl. She's never seen a chicken nor met a cat, but she thought the chickens were beneath her notice, and politely introduced herself to Sherbert the cat. Her owner and I were looking at the bantams in the teenager pen, and she managed to nose open the door (I hadn't hooked it) and came in. Thirty panicked flapping birds, and all she did was walk through to her dad. Lovely!

We haven't made any decisions about her yet, but they will visit again next weekend and see how it goes with all the dogs. They were too busy inspecting each other to play today. Off to an excellent start, though. He took pictures, and will email them later, so I'll share when I get them.

Hey Beth
The eggs I bought at WCA hatched a few days ago. They called me and said 5 hatched but one died about 2 hours later. So yesterday it was late and I told DH lets just pick them up tomorrow. He said we better go get them now or another will die. Should of listened. Another one did. So I have three of them here with me. I don't think they were drinking and maybe not eating
I have gotten them to eat a little. And I just used a dropper to give them some save a chick water mix. They are resting now but I am going to repeat in an hour
I will take some pictures tomorrow if they are acting like little chicks are suppose to.

UPDATE:
The three little ones are diffently not active like little chickies usually are, but they are chirping, just not getting up to get water or food or moving around. I have been giving them water with a dropper, then I put them in front of their food (they nibble on it, but not load up like chicks usually do), and then I have to put them back under the heater or they will just stand where they are at?:/. Not sure what is going on . I am hoping the extra care that they will perk up soon. Or maybe they are really lazy or not so intelligent chickcens. I doubt our friends who hatched these out for us really kept a close eye on them making sure they were eating and drinking. Plus when we go over there they handle their chickens a little to rough . Even my DH thinks they are rough and I should of listened to him and got over there last nigh and might have four. Hopefully these three will make it.[/COLOR]

GREAT :he :rant  its happened again, a couple months ago a pack of hound dogs killed many of mine and my neighbors chickens, they even attacked their newborn foal! Well animal control has been catching them with live traps and my neighbor is shooting any that come on his property. I just haven't been able to shoot them, I'm to softhearted. Well tonight my neighbor called to tell me that the dogs killed her potbelly and 3 of the piglets, and tore into an outdoor brooder and 46 chicks are gone!! So I was just asleep when I heard a ton of noise and ran to the barn to find 3 wild mutts getting their A**es whooped :woot by my boxer pyranees mix, who has started sleeping in the barn! Hope that teaches them

Love this! That dog deserves a steak!

Good morning everyone!! :frow

Chicks hatched yesterday! :love All different egg colors (yay!!!), but unfortunately none of these chicks actually came from my own chickens, so I can't take the credit for the beautiful fuzzies.  Here's some pics:

from Doubleatraining-- EE chicks (yellowish) and olive eggers from the "toppie" hen:

Blue sex links, also from doublea (4 girls, one boy!! great ratio!!)

and some blue egger EEs from another friend of mine:

Also, I picked up some Swedish blue duck eggs to try hatching, and got a free rooster.  He's a giant cochin, 6 months old and already bigger than both of my australorp boys that are 8 months old and almost 2 years old.  That is a gallon sized planter he's standing next to:

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

They are so cute!!! Band the blue sex link rooster because as they start to feather its hard to tell who is getting barred and who has strong lacing! Lol

I can't wait to see the Toppy babies grown up!!!

Mary, I have at least 6 for you to test for me

My niece and I are going, I think. We'll bring chairs! She's never been to a chicken auction before....or any auction, I think. This will be fun!

Anyone have any Bourbon Red poults to sell? All my poults have turned out to be crosses between the BR and the Royal Plam. Good for eating; not so good for breeding with.

Looks like lots of people are having trouble posting. The forum has never moved so slowly. It doesn't seem to be affecting the other threads I participate in, though. Just NC.

Hello Everyone!!
Spent the day picking strawberries at a wonderful place called Hilltop Farms. DD#1 ate more strawberries than she picked...she ended up coming home red and sticky!!
gig.gif
LOL, DH did most of the picking as I was sitting in the car feeding DD#2. All in all, we walked away with 12+ pounds of strawberries!! They are now resting in the fridge and freezer waiting for delicious smoothies, munchies and maybe even a DoubleA Strawberry Pie!! While at the farm, we saw a bunch of beautiful chickens...one I wanted so desperately to sneak into the car and take home with me...I have NO idea what kind of chicken it was, nor did it dawn on me to take a photo of it
he.gif
but it was a nice big "fat" chicken with some unusual coloring. DH commented that who knows we might have one turn out like it from our massive amount of eggs being sat upon!! Our lone chick at the moment is turning out to have some unusual coloring. We think "he" is a mix between the Buff Roo and the Splash Cochin and as such is splash in color with buff "shoulders"..very interesting looking!!

Have a great time at WCA those of you who are going. Best of luck if you buy/sell anything!! I hope to hear how it turns out!!

On a side note...made (and actually ate) my first ever Pork Pot Roast...a special thanks to Alex who "walked" me through making one without using my crock pot!!
