We cleaned out the brooder box today, put fresh bedding down, made up a nest and moved the broody hen Hazel tonight. She was ticked at us for a little while but then settled onto her new nest. I candled the eggs again and I think most of them are developing right. Hoping for a decent hatch . :fl 21 days will be Thursday and Friday but I know it is possible for some to hatch early. I have a question though that DH brought up. How long do you let eggs go before you assume they will not be hatching?

Mama will know when to toss the eggs out. Figure 2-3 days before she leaves the nest with the chicks.
I read an interesting article that the hens "talk" to the chicks in the eggs....That is so awesome !

4 more hatched last night YAY gonna wait and see what happens with the last 7 eggs!
Ok I'm hatching only from my blue silkies, so is this a splash?

thats a partridge! Not unusual anymore to hatch partridge from BBS eggs. It MAY feather in blue, or it may feather in blue partridge...hard to say because it all depends on the hidden genetics

Wow cool! Is it possible to get blue from bbs eggs? And if I breed a blue roo to a bbs hen is it possible to get splash?
bbs = blue/black/splash - it just means blue genetic pens.

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black , 25% Splash
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash
Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black X Black = 100% Black
Splash X Black = 100% Blue
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

So, I have seven new peeps, they are about one day old. One little guy/gal has five toes. It's legs are flesh colored, not black. I bought the egg this chick hatched from on ebay. It the sellers discription is says that the mix of eggs could INCLUDE: BLACK COCHIN, BLUE COCHIN, MOTTLED COCHIN, RIR, MARAN, BLACK AUSTRALORP, FRIZZLES, SILKIES, RED STAR AND ARACAUNAS. MOST WILL BE MIXED BUT SOME WILL POSSIBLY BE PURE AS I DO HAVE ROOSTERS THAT ARE THE SAME BREED AS THE HENS. My question is what breed is this 5-toed chick? I know that silikes have 5 toes, but can they carry the 5-toe trait and not have black skin? I'll post photos later. I haven't had time to get any good ones of them all fluffed out. Also, this chick hatched from a light greenish colored egg. The shell was very thick and I was never able to candle it well. The chick is brown not yellow. and has feathers on its legs.
