My first predator strike this year - one of my Ameraucanas was killed by a snake - her head and neck were smushed and bloody, looks like the snake got her up to her shoulders, and killed her, and then let her go when it just couldn't do any more. SOOO infuriating....pretty sure this is the six-foot black snake we have debated about killing. We hated to kill it, especially since up til now it hadn't caused much problem, but I'm guessing this was that snake. My poor pretty girl.

. Poor sweet girl. I just love my Ameraucana girl.

I'm so sorry about the snake. Usually those black snakes are great for rodent & other snake control. We have some and the keep the amount of poisonious snakes down we have. If its causing trouble like this, you should probably kill it so it doesn't attempt another bird. :(

We have lost several pigeons to the same fate (no chicks yet

) We get ahold of the snake and but it in a old 5 Gal. bucket with lid and relocate it up the road a few miles.
So Sorry you lost a chick that you wanted

so sorry... we had the same thing last year...... let the snake hang around until she tried to eat my Polish hen. Then we trapped and moved her about 10 miles away in a woody area.

So my ever so generous neighbor who just bought 30 BO and Araucana chicks, shows up with I know you wanted Araucana and you just hatched BO's so I brought you 3 Araucanas

He says they are about 3 months old, but mine are 11 weeks and twice the size of these babies. They are sweet, now how am I gonna keep mine from killing them, I don't have a lot to keep them in, I have to just open the house tonight when mine are ready to go to roost and hope for the best. Any other suggestions?
PS excuse the mess in my chicken house, I haven't cleaned it as I have been dealing with some issues with my knees.

in my hen coops. As far as your 11 week old birds being twice the size already, of these 3 month/12 week old birds, what kind of BO's do you have? Yes, in this case you have to just hope for the best. At least you got 3 new birds, not just one.
I had to ask

Is anyone interested in 3-4 Silkie/Ameracauna chicks? 1 is blue, 1 is chipmunk, 1 is blue chipmunk, and it looks like the last one is another blue. They all have full puffy cheeks and fuzzy legs. LOL I can bring them to the WCA tomorrow if anyone is interested. $3 each.

So it looks like we have another EE hen wanting to go broody. She will be a viscous broody too! It took DH and I both to get the eggs from her today (we know they are not fertile, our young cockerals are only just starting to learn to crow). I had to hold her head down with a stick while DH got the eggs from her so he wouldn't get attacked. I've contacted the guy I got my chicks from this year about a few hatching eggs. She is still laying so I know she is not in total broody mode quite yet, but she is definately getting there.

Now for a question. How soon do hens that hatch chicks start laying again? Our hen Hazel now has her 2 week old chick with her in general population. How soon will she start laying again?
