Hello, I am in Franklin county NC, as about as far north as you can go before leaving the county, I have a small farm house with 11 acres, 3 dogs, and I have fostered 2 goats and 1 horse so far. I enjoy planting fruit trees and bushes, gardening, and I am about to embark into raising chickens. For eggs at first, and once I have established a healthy flock and routine, maybe expand in to other breeds and birds. I have been researching breeds and husbandry for over a year now, and it is time to get my feet wet. I am wide open for input or advise, and happy to be a part of BYC.

AND......Good Morning Everyone! All is well here this morning, aside from yet another bird who has found th ehole to get under the barn and can't get out. I have yet to find that hole! But, I opened one and put water inside and food outside in the hopes it will come out. So far they all have. I think I'm just going to have to rewire the whole thing, since I can't figure out how they are getting under. Not looking forward to that!

CSB and RF...Let us know if you're coming to WCA next weekend. I'll show up just to visit!

I have a need for some advice. Last night while trying to convince my BO babies, now 5 weeks old, to sleep in the coop not under it, I noticed one of my roos wouldn't come out even for meal worms! After I got the other babies put up I stepped in the run and he came to me, I picked him up and snuggled him, checked for any vent stain-neg, any injuries-neg, he's just sitting around all puffed up, he would drink water but no scratch or even meal worms. Today there are 3 babies behaving this way, tails drooping, just sitting around puffed up. Their feed is medicated, poop check seems normal poop everywhere. Any suggestions???

I had the same thing happen to one of my brahma babies the other day..... I took it inside and ran cold water over it and it would shake his head and a large lump of food came out of his throat thingy.....hand fed him for a day and watched him good, he is now back outside and doing well. Hope everything works out for the best!

Cocci is rampant with the mild winter and hot/humid summer. Medicated feeds help, do not prevent. Cocci can is transmitted by wild birds, rodents etc... and can lay dormant long periods of time. There are many strains so some don't show the "tell tale bloody poop" But going on their age 5 weeks and puffed up and no other symptoms, I would treat for Cocci.

I use Sulmet. Can be purchased at TSC or many feed stores. 2 tablespoons per gallon of water replaced fresh everyday for 3-4 days. Treat ASAP....Cocci can and will kill them.

You can also use Corrid... I do not know the dosage for that. But is easy enough to look up.

I would suggest calling TSC or feed store and see if they have either before driving all over town.

Thank you, only one feed store in town, TSC is 40+ miles away. I am sure they have something, I gave them some fresh ACV water this morn and they all gobbled it down, but will go to town and get whatever they have at the hardware/feed store.

I never could get the EE's that I have to accept my BO's so I finally decided to allow EE's to free range until they beg to get back in and behave! Thanks for the advise!

I went ahead and took your advise and called and no one has Corid or Sulmet!! checked the next town over and they don't either. Hubby is in Waynesville and will try to catch him before he heads this way get him to stop at TSC. OMG I never would have thought!!
I sure hope my babies make it! They are so sweet.
