How are you and DH holding up Hollow??

You must have some sort of six sense; we just got done having a discussion on it after he got home. It's not going to be easy, but we have a tentative plan. We start tomorrow, with all the ones too young to butcher. My sweet babies.

That will be the hardest part, those babies, and everything else will be easier when we get to the ones we can butcher.

But, we will try and save Bob and the other turkeys. If they are asymptomatic still when we get done with the chickens, which will take several weeks, then we'll set up to have them tested. And hopefully, treated. We'll try, anyway.

And I will try to redirect my brain into the future, and be my normally pragmatic self, and plan the restocking of Hollow Oak Farm. I might not be up for that until spring, regardless of when the quarentine is lifted. But I will plan for it. And I'll be here asking advice and direction and sources. You aren't getting rid of me.

So so sorry to hear this, I can 't imagine, will send good thoughts your way. Good thing you caught it and sounds as if you are making correct and really tough decisions.

EDIT: the egg is under Momma but we shall see if Momma keeps sitting after it gets light in the morning. I made a newbie mistake, I know and I have sworn off helping any eggs hatch in the future or cracking unhatched eggs. For now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the little one.
I have this in emergency forum too but I figured Id ask here too just in case.. This is not the egg I asked about earlier. Momma started pecking at that one and it didnt have anything in it so I took it away.

My broody had 12 eggs to start with. Three got eaten and one disappeared, leaving her with eight. Well when the others hatched, I moved her out to the tractor where she will live with them untill they are old enough not to need heat. I was cleaning out the dog cage she hatched in, and found the egg that had disappeared. It was in a totally different are from the rest of her eggs and I knew it hadnt been moved recently so I figured it was a dud... well after cracking it partway open, I realized that it was moving!!! So somehow it developed but there is still a lot of fluid in the egg and from what I can tell (never seen an egg hatch before) hes not totally developed and ready to hatch. The momma wants nothing to do with him so Im on my own... I know to keep the membrane from drying out but other than that, what else could I do? Or is this a lost cause since I accidentally tore the membrane before I realized it wasnt a dud?

That was even harder than I thought it would be. But the worst is over. I won't say "good morning" today, because it's not.

I was discussing this with some non-chicken friends yesterday, and one of them did give me some perspective. Granted, she knows nothing about how personable chickens can be. But she said that it sounds bad, what we had to do. Then she paused and said, "Good thing it's not cows." She's right. It could be worse. Doesn't make it any better for my babies, or for me, but I keep reminding myself that it could be worse.

Next weekend we'll start on those we can butcher. That will be a sight easier on both of us. Keep your fingers crossed that Bob and the other turkeys stay healthy.

Awwww.. Meg

And your freezer will be plenty full. And you get to look forward to new babies in the spring.
