My beautiful RIR roo Ducky, who I raised from a baby, is getting more and more aggressive by the day. He attacks my dog for no reason. Dog will be sitting 15 feet away, just panting, not even looking at the birds, and Ducky will charge at him. His spurs are coming in so I'm worried if he keeps it up, my dog will be shredded. And to top it all off, today he decided that because I was carrying one of HIS chickens... He was gonna attack the back of my legs.. Got me pretty good. Me and my mom had come to an agreement a while ago that if he attacked one of us or injured the dog, he would go to our friend Steves house to be processed.... I know its for the best cause hes not a bantam I can just carry around until he realizes Im boss. (hes a chunky boy) I just hate it cause I raised him from three days old...

So sorry you have to do this!! Just remember you gave him the best life he could have had!! (Just think how happy he's been with you compared to all those chickens that are in the factory). No words will be adequate, so I will just offer you another BIG hug!!

Those of you suggesting we have rats....wouldn't we see them?!? Would they be able to get in the coop at night when we're all locked up?!? Why wouldn't they "hunt" the broodies sitting on 14+ eggs rather than the maybe 3 (on a good day) that end up in the coop? Most importantly...WHY do we have a barn cat if she's not eating the rats?!? LOL Now what do I do?!?

NH, we just happened upon our rats last night when I went out for a cig before bed and noticed something outside the babies growout pen (which is a wood/wire pen that sits on the ground)
yesterday morning had a dead bird and had no clue what from. a week or so ago some eggs went missing and I was thinking snake until I saw a GIANT RAT near my babies. so when I leave work today I have to set traps and go on night watch with my gun, should be fun! LOL

NH.... Rat will dig right up under the coop or get in any crack or crevice they find...same with snakes. And the broody thing...do you want to mess with a broody hen !

Sorry about the rooster Rookie.. you are making the right choice, when those spurs come in, THAT will hurt !! Trust me!!

Bet he will be tasty

P.S. RIR are known to be aggressive.

You know me and messing with anything in my coop!! I'm STILL a wuss!! As for a rat...so much for a barn cat IF it is a rat!! Maybe if I don't feed her for a few days and lock her and her kittens up in the coop?? LOL nah, they'd probably try to make chicken soup or something!! I do have the coop on concrete, but the run isn't, so I will double check tonight when we lock up to see if there are any nooks or crannies for a rat to sneak in!! We are thinking of expanding our run anyway, so perhaps now is a good time as any to start the tear down and redo of the thing?!? We're planning on enlarging it to three times the size now so if we do go away again (highly unlikely says ME), we can leave them locked up...also gives us room to negotiate quarantines and such. If we redo the run, we're putting concrete footers in (which we didn't do the first time...oops) and bury the HWC deeper with the cut points sticking up!!

On a weird note...I did not hear ONE egg song today but "found" 4 eggs in the nesting boxes this afternoon!!

I know I have 1 that is NOT laying (she is going through a BAD/UGLY slow molt), 2 are sitting on eggs and 3 are "mamas" so egg production is seriously down!! Is it possible that one of the girls is hiding the eggs for some sinister reason?? She's playing with my head isn't she?!? LOL You know...maybe it's my dumb rooster...maybe he's finally been clobbered by our main one enough times that he finally believes that he's a girl!!?? LOL

Hi everyone!

Now that is a lot boxes and LOTS of chickens. So how many does that leave you guys now.... just curious.

Just think they spent an hour just on your chickens. Hope you did well. Why could they not pay you? I would be like WHAT???? People are giving you money so why not?
