North Carolina

Does anyone know of a good feed store within 30 miles of Raleigh, NC? I'd like to get my chickens some feed that is better than dumor!

Thanks.
You can get Purina feeds at family farm store off 54 and 40 behind the new Mcdonalds, Argri Suppy in Garner on 70 has Nutrena feeds. Hudson's hardware on 70 and 50 in garner and on amelia church road and 70 in clayton has purina. I know mostly south raliegh and garner, there are probalby horse feed store in north raleigh and if they have purina or nutrena they can get poultry feed for you, all you need to do is ask and they will usually order anything you need.

Shoot. I coulda added a couple chicks to my order for you, if you wanted babies instead of grown birds.

Congrats on the job! Jobs are a good thing to have in this economy! Go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Why not? It's a win!
if you end up making anymore orders anytime in the near future I would love to surprise her with some babies=)

Quote: I'll let you know before I order again. I'm thinking most hatcheries will shut down for the worst of winter. It'll likely be February or March before I can order again.

Speaking of Hallowe'en, RF...of course my kids are grown and gone, and we don't get trick-or-treaters where I live...so I've got a basket of candy outside my office door at work, and am at my desk wearing a Three Amigos hat. Jake is understandably unhappy about the hat.

Neighbor!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day. My chickens are out of "lockdown" as their deworming episode is complete. We'll see how they do gaining their freedom. My silly duck has "flown the coop" again and is already heading over to our neighbors...despite the fact that I gave all of my group some treats this morning!! Gave DD#2 Porridge for breakfast for the first time and she didn't seem to care for it. LOL (guess that apple didn't fall far from the tree...I HATE oatmeal...I could care less about porridge!!). The chickens..they LOVED it and were snapping it up before I could get it off the spoon...LOL. Ducks & guineas too!! I am excited that we are almost in November!! That means I only have to wait a few weeks until 1) Processing Day with Alex, 2)Alex's Birthday and 3)My birthday (in which DH claims I get a year younger and my beauty increases...she's sucking up...must have forgotten to actually FINISH my present that he's making!!).

I will look forward to a smaller feed bill!! That is until the spring when I stock up on some hens and restock the freezer!! I am making a confetti cake for Alex's birthday - she only wanted a slice, so I am going to make her a cute little 6" cake to take home...that classifies as a BITE, right?!? Hehe.

I have one UNIQUE hen (finally a HEN...if I remember correctly) that is a cross between the splash cochin and my BO rooster....she's orange with this grey splashing...very cute.

Okay...I know this is a "chicken" site, but I also know some of you are farmers and do more than just chickens...so I need advice...Sheep, goat or cow?!? I want to make cheese (remembering DD and I are allergic to pasteurized cow's milk, so we'd be doing raw milk/cheese) and have fresh milk on hand. Which do you recommend? We don't have tons of land (3 acres of pasture/woods) and are hoping to purchase the surrounding 10 acres (but that will be largely wooded).

Needs to be children friendly (we were told sheep were not good around children, but I think you could say that about ANY animal) and "idiot proof" - okay so I am not an idiot, but since I've only been around chickens for a year and horses...I don't/won't consider myself a farm girl or one knowledgeable...I still fall in the farming for dummies category!! Thank you for your input!!

HOWDY!!

Happy early birthday!

I am over the moon about my new coop! Just don't want the 15 minimum chicks I am finding on these web sites! OUCH!

I will have chicks for sale in about 2 weeks... Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Buff Orpington, all pullets....if you are interested.
