Brand spanking new to chickens and live between Gainesville and Jacksonville. We'd been talking about it for about 8 years. We bought books and read them and talked more. We bought a house and moved and planned on getting them soon for the past few years. We were often busy though. We were going to Disney a good bit. We had new grandchildren. The time never seemed right. But, now it is.
12 current chicks. There were 14 but 2 died within 36 hours. Both the same size/color so probably breed. They had a bit of pasty butt which I cleaned but they never seemed to perk up. One sort of did, but she was still not 100%.
Unsure about breeds. I couldn't go into the store and my partner said to pick two from each bin.
I am excited by the personalities, the eggs, the self-sufficiency.
Other Hobbies: reading, Disney trips, spending time with the grandchildren
It's me, my partner of nearly 20 years, and my mother is living with us (again--she lived with us for 10 years and then moved in with my sister in Denver, came for her Christmas/winter visit and got trapped here first by flu that required hospitalization and now because of the pandemic. We have three hound dogs. I am really worried about one of them because she is a dog that will snatch a bird from the sky that flies too close. She turned into a slavering beast when we took her into the room they were in to introduce them and then howled for hours afterward. One hound is only interested in the treats that she can get for being in the room with them. The other one was afraid but warmed up to curious but still afraid. We also have an elderly prairie dog. She's 12 and the last surviving one of a coterie of 4.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I found it years ago when looking for chicken info. I finally joined because chickens and of course, I have questions.
