OK, Fri or Sat, I will let you know which day as soon as I talk w/Mark & see what he is up to. I need feed, AGAIN, so i will be heading to cda for that. thanks.I
I don't have to work tomorrow now so Sunday is the only day I'm busy.
I am "thinking " about adding a young rooster to my flock. I only have 6 hens. They are all just a year old in april. All about the same size. 2 easter eggers,2 buff orp,1 black sex link, 1 partridge rock.
Does anyone have any advice for if its a good or bad idea. How hard is it to do? Would i need to bring in a couple pullets with him so he doesnt get picked on too bad?
Im still not sure if i want to but thinking about the pros and cons.
None of the hens are broody or anything like that, but i recently got some silkies (in a seperate pen) so hoping they will want to sit eventually. So it would be nice to have fertile eggs to give them to sit on.
Any advice is welcome! Thanks!
If you free range your hens, having a rooster is good for protection. Fertile eggs are great if you want to incubate or have a broody have something to hatch. I agree with the advice to not be sentimental about an agressive rooster going bye bye. I have one that is on death row now. He has gone after my granddaughter's and that is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I have LOTS of roosters now if you decide to get one. Several different breeds to choose from. Just let me know if you are interested.
Integrating any new bird can be rough, but they will work it out. If you can put him in an area divided away, but in the same pen for a few weeks, where they can see each other but not touch it helps. If the roo is about the same size as the hens it is also best.
Okay thats what im mostly concerned about is that they will all gang up if i add a single bird.
We dont mind getting rid of an aggressive rooster. All the hens are very friendly and have a real big run that i go in to rake and clean up regularly, i also let them free in the yard a few evenings a week so want to still be able to do those things.
I dont have any trouble with predators so its not really for that. But i got a few silkies that im hoping will be willing to sit on eggs later this fall when they are bigger and so would love to have fertile eggs fron my laying hens to raise up my own chicks for next year. The silkies have their own coop and run tho so i dont have to worry about their size.
The rooster will be with all similar sized hens
Still undecided, but would like to know what breeds you have. I love puffy faces ameraucanas or easter eggers. I have a easter egger hen with really puffy cheeks that i love! But would like to to know what you have available! Thanks.
I have juvenile Isbar ready now. I have Black/Blue copper Marans chicks, I have Blue Laced Red Wyandotte chicks, I have some different colored feathered legged olive egger chicks, and then some backyard mixes in a variety of colors also. It has been the year for roosters around my house.
