Northeast Poultry Congress 2013

Well, the hawk is a story worth telling. 8) I came home from a lunch date with my daughter and pulled into the driveway. The coop is right by the driveway and I saw the hawk in the run standing over the 2nd silkie. I grabbed a shovel (out of instinct, I had no plan) and ran over to the run. The hawk tried to fly away, but couldn't figure out how to get out of the run. So she flew INTO the fence at just the right angle to get her head wedged in the 2x3 hardware cloth. She wasn't injured at all. I just grabbed her wings from the back (like a chicken, ha!), held her quite firmly as far away from me as I could. She couldn't really fight, though, with her wings so tucked in. She gave me the meanest look she could muster. And I put her in a dog crate that was sitting behind the coop stuck in the snow. I don't see how to download pictures (I think there's a rule about number of posts and I don't post all that much). But I put the picture in my avatar if anyone is interested.

Interestingly enough, I later noticed a pretty big spot of blood in the driveway and it trailed up the driveway (very creepy). I had 6 adult silkies (2 roos, 4 hens), 2 welsummer adult hens, an adult leghorn hen, an adult bantam hen, and 2 adult olive egger hens and about 20 8 week old chicks in the coop. I have accounted for all of the adults, I think. I just moved chickens around a few weeks ago, so I feel a little unsure of where everyone's at. I'm thinking the hawk must have grabbed a chick and carried it out of the run, then came back for more.

I didn't know what kind of hawk it was and I figured, uh, when in doubt, do the right thing. Turns out that it's a red-tailed hawk, a very common hawk, though protected under the migratory birds act. I'm sure she'll be back, especially because the fish and game guy said he was going to drop her off TEN MILES from here. Guess I'll be putting some bird netting over the top of my run for the short term. More in depth reconstruction in the spring?

That being said... I'd really prefer hatching eggs. I'd like to limit the chance of bringing stressed birds prone to sickness home. Already done that. So if anyone knows of anyone, I'd be thrilled.

Thanks!!

I *think* you can start posting pics after 10 posts, so answer this and then try.
You are certain this was the SAME hawk?
There is another remedy spoken about in posts here.
I have not practiced it, but I am pretty sure, in fine print in some obscure rulebook, on another planet, this is allowed.
It is called SSS. Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.
I know I'm gonna get in trouble even mentioning this, but somewhere there is something written about predators, and protecting your flock.
Please anyone looking for a battle, don't bother with me.
FWS has already been called, and look at the great job they did.

I'm sorry for your loss, and great job catching the bugger!

I have a friend that sells Silkie eggs on e-bay, you can look her up "Riverside Silkies"
I can take some eggs for you if you want.
The Silkie chicks I will have in the sales area are mostly her line.

OR, if you want the cutest mutts (I call them mutts because I don't have separate breeding pens for each color of every breed)
I can bring surprise eggs. From Black Copper Marans down to Seramas, and EVERYTHING in between....

Hi Everyone, I was thinking of going to the show however didn't put in to be a vendor in time. Testing the waters here for interest. I have a few 8 week old CLs that I'm thinking of letting go of. Pullets due to lack of crest, young roos because I have a bunch. Also Rhodebars also 8 weeks. These are directly from GFF. Pls PM me if interested.

Stoopid,
I purchased eggs from Riverside Silkies on Ebay at the end of December and am waiting for them to hatch (1/19/13). Only 2 are viable, not surprising since they were shipped. Would you be able to bring me 6 more of her B/B/S eggs to the show? I can pay her thru Paypal, my ebay name is liljunie also.

Thank you!!

I have 3 paint silkie cockerels for sale. these boys are pretty spoiled in that they live in a heated building (52 degrees) oct/nov hatch dates. dad is paint over black/blue hens.

Wow, I am surprised, she always has good hatches.
I will e-mail her right now.

Hi all,

I was originally going to resist buying anything or hatching anything for a while. However, a hawk ate two of my silkie hens today. So I need something to cheer me up. I did manage to catch the hawk. I turned her into Fish and Game which makes me wonder if I am just going to see her again soon. He said he was going to take her ten miles away and turn her loose. I asked if he would take her a little further.

Anyway... I am looking for paint or BBS silkie hatching eggs that I can pick up at the show. I also would like leghorn (any variety) hatching eggs. Does anyone have these available?

Thanks!!
I am brinnging some blue & black eggs, no splash. And a ton of silkie chicks. I bet I will have 50 for sale, most of them blue! None are old enough to sex yet, but at least we can count toes,, etc....
