Northeastern Poultry Congress 2015

IF you have cat carriers that can work well. Or a medium carrier for several. My suggestion is to crate birds from different pens separately.

In the past I attended a sheep show/sale at that same venue, with the intention of learning and not buying, a morning turned into a lonnnng day as DH had to drive back home and bring the truck. lol

I'm considering bringing a few crates.

This is off topic but if I was to get baby chicks or pullets, do I keep them inside the whole winter? I know the baby chicks need a brooder for a few weeks but if I got pullets, do I bring them outside for a few hours each day? I live in CT

I don't think you'll find chicks in the northeast this time of year. They would need some heat until they feather out enough to keep themselves warm.

Pullets are female birds up to a year old. Anything hatched before October (most people here stop hatching by mid-Summer) should be fine outside.

I agree with Jill,

One caution: ask the seller where the bird has been kept and realize that birds need time to adapt to new conditions, especially to colder temps.

I went all day... it was a blast! There were a lot of birds for sale: turkeys, geese, ducks, every chicken breed you could ever want, and even some bunnies! I gave into the temptation and came home with these two Pekin Duck hens! My first ever ducks!

This was my first show and it definitely seemed like a great way to pick up some nice birds. My friend and I both came home with new additions. Your ducks are adorable!!

Yes, it's the biggest Buying & Selling meetup I know of in New England. What birds did you and your friend get?

I got a young breeding pair...lemon blue bantam cochin cockerel and a brown red bantam cochin pullet, plus two silkie chicks that were of the same age as a singleton blue bantam cochin chick that I already had. The chick is very happy to have some company!! Also picked up 8 hatching eggs that I pre-arranged to have someone bring...I'm hoping I have better luck with these since the USPS didn't get a chance to shake them up and lose them for a few days.

My friend got two mixed pullets and one of them laid a very pretty dark olive egg today! The other should lay a brown egg.

We had so much fun. This was a first for both of us and we couldn't stop ohh'ing and awe'ing and giggling as we walked around looking at every single chicken there. We definitely looked the part of newbies. Definitely looking forward to going to other shows in the future!
