Northern coop plans - comments wanted, especially on ventilation

that's pretty much the same roofing i used,
except mine was used one before on another building

are you putting that directly over the roof rafters on strapping?

i have the pink board as opposed to the blue, but they're all far better in any location that there may be moisture then fiberglass insulation in my experience as an architect.

they're typically tongue and groove, but you ought to seal the seams with tape made just for this purpose, or spray applied foam insulation

you'll find both in the hardware store.

where did you say you're located?

I haven't figured out the exact framing details yet. I'm getting pretty creative :) I might run my "rafters" sideways so it works for the roofing. I am not planning on using roof sheathing.

I'm in Middlebury.

I'm thinking of not insulating the floor since I'll have so much ventilation it's pretty much pointless.

Good luck with your coop. I'm in Johnson and just built mine in June. I'll share some of my decisions with you.
1. Mine's 8'x14', I figured that would be good enough for the 15 chicks I ordered. Three died in shipping and dog got five yesterday ($%#@!@!). Need more now.
2. I chose not to insulate it. After much research, draft free, well-ventilated, and cold hardy chicks are the way to go. You are going to need to run a heat lamp out there in the winter to keep water from freezing anyway.
3. Chose not to paint. Smell, toxicity, cost and work= not worth it to me. I'm either going want to get rid of 'em or build a smarter or bigger one in ten years anyway.
4. Chose not to build nest box doors. I go in it every day to check food and water anyway.
5. Floor is exterior grade 3/4" plywood covered with pine shavings. Rake it and add a little every week, shovel out droppings. Insulating the floor is definitely overkill as it will be covered with bedding.
6. Put some hardware cloth over a 42" square 2x4 frame to put the waterer on. Anything less and they foul up the water by kicking bedding into it.
7. Plastic waterers>metal ones, I've heard lots of stories about leaky metal waterers.
8. I have two "monitor windows" that open on top and a 2'x4' opening on the front, along with some vents on the top. I'm going to close the windows and use a sliding piece of scrap plexiglass to cover the open front as needed.
9. Best information I've seen, heard or read is from patandchickens on these forums. Search patandchickens on BYC for wealth of good advice.

are you looking for a particular breed?

i don't have any extras but in case i find someone who does...

Nice of you to ask!
Yeah, we lost all our dominiques and they were my wife's favorites. We have a nice looking Speckled Sussex rooster and would like to get some more Sussex hens too. We'd consider any decent layers who were cold hardy. IT's going to be awfully airy in that coop for just 7 birds. GOing to the Vermont Bird Fanciers SUnday thing down the road at the field days this weekend to take a look around.
