What an ordeal! Good advice in here. Wanted to say that straw is bad bedding for chooks because it is hollow and mites can and do lay eggs inside the straw stalks. DE is good only as preventative. Great to have in dust bath. Am thinking of adding a dust bath area under coop and using both DE and Sevin in it before chigger season comes. I keep 10% Sevin dust all the time. Use it for flea powder in summer months along dog's back. Stock up because I hear our infinitely wise and all-knowing government inside the DC beltway is going to take it off of the market.

This post should resolve any doubts people have about going to auctions and flea markets and buying poultry to add to a healthy flock. I will never do that. When my flock slows down to where I am needing replacement chooks, I will definitely reorder from my original provider (Meyers/Ohio) They run a bio-secure facility and urge all owners to try to do same. I am not going to even allow anyone to step foot into their pen from now on. Never can tell what could be tracked in to my chooks, parasites, etc. This post shold also encourage other poultry owners to do a thorough evaluation of their practices, their premises and buildings for all aspects of maintaining a healthy flock.
