northern nevada

Hey, I live in Sun Valley....looking for others in my area with house children's. I just got one the other day, I might not be able to keep her, unless I can find a cage/pen for free....she's 6 weeks old....let me know if you could take her or have extra stuff to get rid of. Thank you, Jacquie

Just updating my last post....I am keeping her. Not that this thread is blowing up, but just wanted to say I'll be keeping her. But if anyone has anything they still want to get rid of, just let me know. Thanks, Jacquie

Seems really quiet in here. Just joined BYC and I'm excited to be here. Thought I would look for others in my area to cluck about poultry

. Would love to hear from some folks about keeping ducks here in northern NV. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi. Was outside yesterday and noticed what appeared to be a hawk. Circled once. Never noticed before in my neighborhood. Not sure if he was just scanning area or knows that I have chickens. I let them free range all day. The area they are kept is under two mature trees which provides a canopy leaves and branch's and yard is surrounded by 10 ft cinder block walls and coop located in a greenhouse. Is there any other precautions I should take to protect my feather babies? Thanks

There is a page that has good suggestions for protection against hawks, just check the forums.

Predators and Pests

There is a feed for protection against hawks.

Do you have a rooster? Sometimes a rooster will go against a hawk, but they also keep an eye out and will sound the alarm if there is danger. I have heard that a goose can bee a good "guard dog" too. Good cover is helpful too, open spaces can be dangerous. Good luck
