northern new england poultry fanciers annual basket show august 4

It's great that you can get your birds tested at a swap, but isn't that kinda late?As you have already exposed your birds to someones birds that may be contaminated.Make sure he cleans his blade after every bird.

it's not really a swap, it's a "for fun" show and only birds that come from flocks that have previously been tested can be tested at the show for their yrly. anyone new, has to have a home visit. (and yes, he cleans and sterilizes the needle each time.)

This will be my first show and was wondering how long is the show

How much does it cost to get in

Is there a kids division

And what were the prizes

Thanks in advance

I can tell you some about this show, but I'm hoping the person that started this thread will answer since I think they are a club member.
the show will start about 9:00 - the gate opens at 8:00, you need to sign up for your class when you get there. (find a person at a table and they can point you to the sign up table/booth.)
it's been $2-3 per class- jr class is generally cheaper then the open class and this is for kids under 18? maybe 16 yo (open is usually adults showing but kids could sign up for that instead if they have been showing for yrs) . you pay your entry fee/ bird - if you enter 3 birds, it the entry fee x 3. you can show just one bird if you want or as many as 20 if you feel you have decent birds. (not sure if they have a limit on how many you can show). the prizes the yr my son showed was jr show champion was $25 and a trophy, also money for 2nd and 3rd. in the open show the prize money is a higher but so is the competition.
you want to make sure:
your birds are clean, bathe them if needed and depending on the breed you will need to do this a few days before the show or the day prior if you are showing silkies. trim toenails and beaks if they are long or hooked

make sure your bird fits the breed standard- its all about learning so even if it doesn't, there are people there that will help you, tell you what you need to work on to improve your birds.
the birds should be in good weight, not skinny and well grown up, they should look like adult birds even if they are young.(so 6 months or older)
they need to be tested for NPIP to be shown. if your flock has never been shown you will need to have a tester come to your house and test your entire flock or 30 birds, which ever is less. if they have been tested previously, you can bring 10% of your flock and one bird of each breed to the tester as well as a copy of your prior test. there will be a tester on site but you will not be able to use his services if your flock has never been tested. I can prove you with the names of testers in your area if needed.
anyone else want to chime in here.
