Nostalgia...

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else has nostalgic memories from the past?

I don't know if it happens when you hit a certain age and all of a sudden you remember the good ole days!

I am in my early 20's which makes me a child from what I believe to be some of the best years around!! - You've guessed it, the 80's!!

And of course the 90's soon followed on... (and then the "naughties" (00's) (doesn't time fly so quickly)!

I'm trying to think of things you guys can relate to now but the movies around that sort of time which I thought was amazing for the times were Short Circuit, Flight Of The Navigator, The Goonies, Hocus Pocus, Honey I shrunk the kids, The Gremlins, Terminator, Indiana Jones and many, many more!

And then of course the incredible Jurrasic park came out in the early 90's I think...

TV episodes? Well in my era it was Saved by the bell, sabrina the teenage witch (mmm melisa joan hart), Land of the giants, Happy days (may have been a re-run)

And in the school holidays I used to watch an american program called "bug juice" which was basically following kids/teenagers at summer camp where they did team building "growing up" and outdoor activties like rafting etc.! I always wished I could go!

Now on to games, well of course there was the famous Rubik's cube and slinky! Technology was at it's all time best with space invaders in the arcades and pong (with the 2 paddles and moving ball on the TV screen)...

Ahh the days of good style and fashion as well with flared trousers (pants) and bright day glo colours and technicolour shirts that used to change colour from illuminous yellow to bright day glo green!

Cars that used to be strong and made of metal (we used to sit on the roof at air days), now they are made of flimsy plastic that bends on the slightest weight...

I'm sure I have more to add, but that's enough for now I don't want to hog the whole topic so...

Do you have any more memories from that past that you would like to add or share?

Well, I'm a little older then you but as I remeber it, a few of the things you mentioned were from the 70's, at least here in the states.

I wonder if your refering to the same "land Of the Giants" I'm thinking of, that was early 70's stuff.

Funny thing too, because I was just going over some nostalgic stuff of my own, remember Red Dwarf?

When I first got on the internet I created a Red Dwarf Web page on Geocities; Geocities is no longer in existance, but my web page is still there

I'm going to assume that you are more likely to know of Red Dwarf then most of the people here in the U.S., but I may be wrong. That was my favorite show for a period back in the mid 90's.

The UK always seems to be the last place in the world to see anything that originates from the USA (movies, PC games etc.) I guess that could be because whatever is imported has to be approved by the european commision first (who now govern our laws - thanks EU) and then it gets classified by the UK again so all of this takes time...

Usually movies and PC games take about 6-12 months to reach us after they have been released in the states (which is probably why game/software/movie piracy is so widespread here).

I sure do remember Red Dwarf...

It's an aquired taste but I absolutely loved it. Some of the humor was just so childish and the budget for the program was almost zilch but that is what makes the program "sooooo great!" (Tony the keloggs crispys tiger anyone). One of my favourites gags was the lightbulb scene when they have to change the lightbulb to go from blue alert to red alert!

I think the land of the giants may have also been a re-run. It was definately the old version when they were stranded in some kind of jungle/island and then they were climbing around the place on giant paper clip chains... (I never did understand the plot)

Ah geocities... Yep my first free website was hosted there! Long before the invention of blogs and wiki's...

Ahhhh, a trip down memory lane....I too remember those....but was shareing them with my children. LOL
For me....The lone ranger...Mickey Mouse Club, the ORIGINAL with Annette!! Howdy Doody...The Waltons, the Honey Mooners..."Straight to the Moon Alice!!" LOL Always made me laugh. Heck, I remember our FIRST color screen. Blue on top, green on bottom....it attached over the TV. LOL Then I remember our first REAL color TV. Amazeing!!
Bell bottoms, tie dyed shirts...hot pants! Peasant blouses...and the dreaded tube tops! LOL
Yes, I was a child of the 60's. We were poor farmers...so games involved, hide and seek in the corn fields..and catching frogs...kickball...and fishing.
My first car was a Gremlin...I miss that old car! Wish I had it still. Thanks for the trip...I dont get time to take them much any more.

My first car was a 1981 Chevy Citation, LOL. I *LOVED* that car.

I was born in '75, so it was old when I got it.

I was the Nintendo generation. I bought my 1st nintendo with babysitting money, and was addicted to Tetris.

We watched The Fall Guy, Magnum PI, Knight Rider, The A Team...and who watched Solid Gold?? LOL, my Mom loved that show.

As an 8 year old, I spent my Fridays waiting for the "Dukes of Hazzard" to come on. Saturday mornings were all about the road runner and Tom and Jerry. I wore floods (pants that were too short) and the dreaded "moon boots" I played with merlin (electronic game) and we did get pong when I was about 10. We used to play "capture the flag" and hide and seek ALOT.

In my early teen years we moved on to Activision a (video game) and I watched Magnum PI, Knight Rider and sports. My dad controlled the remote LOL. I listened to Kenny Rogers and Michael Jackson back then. I soon moved onto the likes of Twisted Sister and Motley Crue. As soon as MTV came out I became a ROCKER

Spent my teen years playing sports and trying to get out of going to school. I did get straight A's but I hated being there. Too many jerks there.
I love nature and camping, so since then I've spent as much time as possible in the great outdoors with my son and husband. We moved out to the country and we are never going back!!!the end.

Don't get me started on going down memory lane lol! God I am so old I could be here for hours going on and on about all the things I have seen. I miss a whole lot of things but the tv shows from the '60s were the best especially the Twilight Zone. I remember when people talked on the phone they wanted privacy, now we are subjected to everyones phone calls on their cell. Drive in movies were the best. Remember when you actually had to get up the couch to change your tv channel. Remember when you only had a choice of 3 channels or less ( CBS-ABC-NBC). Now you have people whinning over there is nothing on to watch and they have over 100 channels! I am a child of the '60s and I might be biased but that decade was life changing-the music, the politics, the space race to the moon and etc. Oh what a pandoras box you have open. I will close for now before I get all depressed on how many things I miss.

Has anyone seen the british comedy faulty towers (based in a torquay hotel starring john cleese) - Very funny indeed...

Are you being served - another good british classic, a bit dated now but still very funny.

I'm trying to think of american programs I am watching at the moment so you can relate to them... Hmm...

Family guy - very funny but it's not as good as it used to be because stewie has stopped wanting to kill lois! lol Stargate atlantis!!! - I can't wait for the new season to air. That 70's show and scrubs...

My local PBS channel still runs Are You Being Served and I love it!
That channel airs a lot of Brit sitcoms: To the Manor Born, Keeping Up Appearances, Monty Python's Flying Circus, My Family (not quite as old), and As Time Goes By (also not quite as old). I also watch BBCAmerica.
When the SciFi channel began in the mid-90s(? ) I watched Moonbase Alpha (if that 's what it was called), The Prisoner, and others... I don't recall all the names, but they were definitely British.
As I kid in the late sixties to early seventies I remember watching The Lennon Sisters, The Partridge Family and yes, I'll admit I watched The Brady Bunch.
My favorite thing to watch on any Saturday was Horror Incorporated, where they aired the old campy 1940s and '50s black and white movies. The Blob scared the bejeebers out of me the first time I saw it.
Nowadays I spend more time with my chickens than I do watching TV--now that's entertainment!
