This isn’t very high priority, but one of my hens, about a year ago, had one of her nostrils wear away. Basically, there’d be a pinhole and a line separating her nostril in two, and over time this got wider and wider until most of her nostril just fell off. That was a year ago and she didn’t show any signs of ill health. Now the same thing is happening to her other nostril. Anyone know what this might be from? I’m thinking this may just be a deformity of hers.

Also, a few weeks ago some of my hens got overweight. Most are back to normal, but this hen hasn’t gotten back to normal. You can feel she’s gotten heavier around her breast muscles, which seem way larger than they normally are. There is no bulging around the abdomen. She sometimes stands around, pooped out. She’s less active than she usually is. For reference, she’s a 3 1/2 yr Australorp. She’s currently in molt.

Thanks for the help :)

Can you open her mouth and inspect the inside? See if there are any whitish deposits that look like unswallowed food.

That looks like infection, perhaps from canker.
Ditto. Possibly sinus canker. If it is, Metronidazole will be needed.

Can you post a photo of the other nostril?

Sorry for being late to respond. I’ve had a hard time getting her to open her mouth, but in the few times I was able to see inside, I haven’t seen any cankers or deposits of any kind.

What is that substance on her beak? Does it come off with a damp cloth? I noticed it on your other photo, as well. It may have significance if it isn't just an indication of a sloppy eater.

It’s just feed. When I came to check on her, the beak was clean.
