My son found this little guy and we aren't sure what it is!

Did your son just find it in a field? The Killdeers nest and raise their young on the ground, so most likely the mom and dad were around when he picked it up. If you could find the parents again, they might accept it back. We had some in our yard this Summer as well and my son caught one of the chicks. We let it go after we got a good look, though, and it went back to Mama. I would encourage you to try to return it.
