I've been considering a Rooster for a while now... and have decided since moving to the country, that I would like to grow my flock. For two main reasons, I have decided to obtain a Roo.
1. For the added protection against hawks which I have not yet seen, but know do exist here.
2. So that over time, I can both grow my own flock, AND raise some meat chickens.

So I obtained a free rooster locally, from a "farmer" who advertised them as Dominecker roos. (also known as Dominique) It's my opinion that the farmer doesn't really know much about chicken breeds, and most likely has a mix of farm mutt chickens. I chose this fellow.

Just looking at his comb alone, I know he is NOT a Dominique. He has a very beautiful SINGLE comb. NOT a Rose Comb .
Another give away is that he has other colors BESIDES the standard black and white. Flecked here and there in his stripes, he has beautiful red feathers. Most of those are around his neck. At the bottom of his wings and mixed into his tail, he has beautiful green iridescent feathers. Here's a second photo to show his markings.

My guess is that he's a Barred Rock mix. Any ideas what the OTHER part (or parts) may be? Thanks in advance!! I think this might be my first time posting here, but I have been a member for a while, and visit often!!

Which would make sense because those are easily available in this area at the Farmer's Co-Ops, and it seems to me that there are a lot of misinformed people out there when it comes to what a Dominique is. lol

Off to look at some info about the black sex links! Thanks, guys!

yea my reason i say this is because my black sexlink rooster looks like this and has the little brown areas like that one does.

I read somewher that it used to be that all black & white barred chickens were called "Dominicker" because of their coloring (Dominique refers to Sunday (domingo) and the black/white combo looked like priest's/minister's cloaks). If this is true, then this person, calling it a Dominicker instead of using the term Dominique, may just be repeating the common term in the area for this color pattern. Especially if he is an old timer in the area.

The older folks around here call all the black and white barred birds "dominikers". I think he is either a black sex link or a barred rock, the brown streak is making me lean more toward bsl. He is very pretty.

That makes some better sense then... We live in "good ole' boy" country, so I could see an old timer doing that. All that I found on line only said that Dominecker was a "bastardized" term that came from Dominique. All of which fits with what you're saying.
