Exactly! Cornish X chicks can be pretty cheep! Meyer has them at a very low cost, I believe less than a dollar each, if you buy a dozen and cheaper if you buy more. Standard roo's are more expensive to buy, and more expensive to feed since they take so long to grow to a decent size. The feed conversion just isn't there.

I just stew my squirrels in a crock pot, comes out tender every time. Makes a lovely Brunswick stew.

They are usable, you just don't want to roast of fry them. They're better for stewing, making soup or stock, etc.

But, if you have a handsome cockrel, and have never eaten coq au vin, you might find yourself craving roosters. According to tradition, the rooster should be around a year old when you prepare him.
