Hey, I’m new to this group and I’m looking for some advice. I have 4 girls that are 1 1/2 years old. We raised them from chicks and were good layers up until 2 months ago. We’d get usually 3 eggs per day for a while. Now, if I’m lucky I find an egg once a week. The weather on Long Island has been cool since the beginning of October and I cleaned the coup a week ago. I thought new straw and pine shavings would spur them on to lay; but nothing is happening. The feed is the same, and I give them meal worms, table scraps and scratch on occasion. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, DrBwell

Have you noticed them dropping feathers? At this time of year, adult birds (after their first year) will moult, ceasing laying for a few weeks in order to grow a new set of feathers for the winter months.

Most likely just cutting back because of the weather/season. If you throw a light in there coop to come on about 4:30 each morning it could help increase the chances of higher egg production.
