Hello,
My husband and I recently brought home 7 RIR hens to integrate into our flock. I’ve already asked many questions on the forum re these girls as they seem to have some health issues. So thank you all for your patience with me!
First off some of their beaks are wonky, and I’m wondering if these re leg mites? If you can help I’d really appreciate it!
I‘LL be in church for a few hrs tonight but will check back ASAP, so don’t think that I’ve slinked off!

Those are scaly leg mites I think. You have to coat the legs in linseed oil or something similar. Someone with more experience will chime in. The beaks I'm not sure about either but it looks like they might have been clipped. Where did you get these poor girls from? Are they the ones having respiratory issues as well? I think we were talking about them tonight. They look a lot better than my sickies did if that's any consolation

I have RIR crosses who have had their beaks clipped by a previous owner. Their beaks tend to grow out odd as well and it interferes with their ability to eat. I take toe nail clippers and lightly trim it to return the beak to a somewhat normal shape. Only do this with the thin, almost translucent, part of the beak (and don't take too much off at a time, it's like literally trimming a toenail). It doesn't seem to cause my girls pain when I do it lightly and they look much better afterwards.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.
Unfortunately the seller mentioned NOTHING about any of these issues. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with chickens so we happily brought them home and are just now discovering these issues as we spend more time with them.
Re the respiratory issue… only one is having issues, I mentioned her nose being snotty, I checked her yesterday and the nose has cleared up, or it could have been water from drinking..so that’s one good thing!
I have my work cut our for me, that or we’ll return them if things look too bleak

Thank you for chiming in. So your RIR are doing well despite the beak issue? Did you have to cull any?

So, my husband and I are thinking of contacting the seller of these hens to possibly return them and many of their beaks are funky. Some beaks are stubby, some are off (over-bite and under bite) the worst one is the pic I shared above. I’ll try to get pics later today, but it’s snowing at the moment.
Any advice is welcome! I’d hate to see these girls go, but if the beak issue is not fixable, they just may not work out.
