Not an injury; 'Tag' on chick's jaw.

Are you sure it cut itself on the shell and the blood didnt come from its umbilical ? First thing is put some antibiotic ointment on that.
Does the tag get skinny at the base ? It feels like soft toenail ? I wonder if there is a blood supply to it ? If you pinch it does it change color ? Turn whiter ?

Yes - I was watching when it hatched, and it rolled out of the egg with a well-healed naval, then got into some shards of shell from previous eggs having hatched. It was cleaned and disinfected with Chlorhexidine solution and purified water, with light pressure applied to the cut until it stopped bleeding. If it hadn't stopped, I would have applied baking powder to stop the bleeding - it works as well as corn starch or Quik-stop. I used a porous rubber mat over the top of the factory plastic screen to prevent the chicks from rubbing against hard plastic after hatching, while allowing humidity to move freely, so it wasn't from rubbing its naval on the screen. This was caught within a few minutes of happening, and the cut is firmly scabbed over now.

It does feel like toenail, but firm rather than soft. It doesn't give to pressure or show a visible change, but the chick displays discomfort when there's more than a light pressure directly applied to it - I used tweezers, to better see if there was a visual change - so it must have nerve endings, which indicates a blood supply. It does not taper at the base, or flare - it remains the same diameter. When applying pressure, I was careful not to pull against the skin, so that I could be sure the chick was responding to the pressure itself.

Edit 1: I did try to look inside the mouth, but the chick is not amenable! It is drinking without any problem - actually seems quite thirsty, or maybe it just likes the vitamin water - so it's functional. As young as it is, I don't want to risk forcing it yet.

Edit 2: I can confirm that it's eating. The other one who looks like it has a strange penchant for rolling over on its back to sleep. It rolls back onto its belly just fine when disturbed, it just... splays out flat on its back and sleeps that way.

Baby #2 is fine. I have them do that often. They are still figuring up from down out. LOL It doesnt seem to bother it but a good look in the mouth wont hurt.

Baby #2 is going to be an entertaining one, I think. Not just laying on its back - completely splattant and spread-eagle, legs sticking straight down. Looks like a human infant sleeping on its back. A very fuzzy one...

I'll give the one with the tag until tomorrow morning, so that it has more time to rest up and get some vitamins into it - it's only been in the brooder for... about four hours now - and then see if I can convince it that I'm not really the dentist, so it can say AHH.

LOL The struggle is real ! I have forced fed a few.

I can imagine! I've had to try and get a snake to open up and let me see into its mouth - at least the chick has something to hold onto! You would not believe how hard it is to keep hold of a head-shy snake - which describes pretty much every Ball Python, hence how they got their common name (Defensive mechanism: Curl up in a ball and stick their head in the middle) - when you're messing with its head.

Umm, If it were a show chicken I would snip and be ready to cauterize but its a mix right ? Just for your own enjoyment ?

Yes, it's a mixed breed, who will hopefully be joining the Great Slaughter - aka, helping to demolish the plague of Mormon Crickets headed this way. I'd snip the tag off if it seemed to be bothering the chick, and if it starts to be a problem it'll come off. But currently - it doesn't seem to be hurting anything, and I'm curious to see how it develops, so I'll be leaving it there.

good deal. For the curious how about some measurements to see if it grows w/ the chick ? If it gets harder, ect...

The chick is #8 to hatch out of 8, from egg #9 of the original 12 set.
#8 Tag 1.jpg #8 Tag 2.jpg
An unusually long egg.
At setting, the egg weighed 54 grams.
On day 11, the egg weighed 48 grams.
On day 18, the egg weighed 42 grams.
Egg hatched on day 21.
On removal to the Brooder, the chick weighed 33 grams.

The tag is 1/8th of an inch in length as of 6/27/18, hatch day.

Currently it is easily manipulated in any direction from the base, but is firm enough that it does not bend.

That enough measurements?
