NOT culling Buttercup - she's on the mend.

I still haven't culled her yet. I should have but I got caught up with some stuff at my childrens school. I left her in with the other girls last night so that she would have one last night with them.

If there is no significant improvement I'll be culling her today.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, they really have helped.

It is always very hard to cull a pet that you love dearly.

I can't possibly imagine how hard this is for you and on you. I'm devastated to have had to cull a chick today I had for only a few hours, but you've had a relationship with Buttercup. I'm very sorry for you both, but want to remind you she goes on to bigger and better things and you will have her in your heart always.

Love and prayers for you both.

Edited because I'm a grammar nazi.

I am so sorry that both you and Buttercup are going to have to go down this road.

I am thankful that she has such a compassionate owner. You are doing the right thing.

Ok well maybe I spoke too soon. Yesterday morning I decided to try one last thing. A last ditch effort to save Buttercup. I gave her 10ml of cod liver oil orally. Yesterday afternoon she seemed slightly improved and was even pecking at some food. This morning she had perked right up and has been eating. Inside the coup was the biggest pile of runny poo and egg white ever seen on the face of the planet! So the cod liver oil has certainly cleared out *something*

Obviously I know that it's just a matter of time for this hen, but for the time being I'm going to watch and wait. Her tail is up again, the swelling has gone down and she seems happy.

I must say a small part of me really really REALLY wants to see what her insides are like and what is causing these problems. But for now I'm happy to have her on the mend.

So I wont do anymore false alarm posts with this hen. Next time I post (because of her being ill) I won't do it till she's been culled and I have necropsy results.

Thanks everyone again for the kind words.

WOW - I'm going to try that when I get home - I've been trying to save my 7 yr old SLW for 2 weeks now, and not having any luck. Don't worry about the "false alarm" - this dialogue may help my hen! Thanks!
