For about 4 months now one of my hens has had messy butt, crust builds up that is hard/rubbery and almost unbreakable. I've soaked her, rinsed her and she STILL squats like she's trying to poop? I checked months ago and she's not egg bound. Eating and drinking normal but poop smells awful. What the HECK is going on???

Sorry guys I'm new to this site and dont know the ins and outside yet. Why does it say "hatching" under my name?

Newbie meaning just hatched a new member. That’s so we know to welcome you to BYC. As you grow in time and experience the name will change under your avatar or photo. You get trophy points for different things and those add up. Each level is a different name.
Welcome!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, Ellie! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive: Obviously she has "pasty butt" and is trying to poop. Soak her butt in warm water for at least 10 minutes trying to get the poop off. She could possibly die if the procedure isn't taken care of. What are your feeding her? She might need her diet changed if this keeps continuing to happen. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

The "hatching" I believe is because you are a newbie, lol, mine keeps changing and I haven't been on here all that long, i think it has to do with the number of posts, the number of replies, the number's of likes you've given or received..etc.. I'm seriously not a eggspert by any stretch of the imagination, but what you are describing sounds like pasty butt like what the chick's can get. One of the you-tube things I watch, talks about bathing them, getting the poo off and then putting vasoline there so that it doesn't stick as bad. I've never in my 2.5 years of chicken keeping seen one squat to poo, but mine have when they started laying, I'd step in the coop, they'd squat down right in front of me and almost trip me, I finally started patting them right in front of their tail a couple of times, they'd get up, shake it off and go about their business.. I think they thought I was their boyfriend.. lol.
