NOT Emerg. But what's up with this rooster?

Haha, I wouldn't be so sure! Usually chickens love bathes, but you have to be certain to keep their head above the water, because if you don't they melt right into it, because they are so relaxed.

they love bathes, and after this you'll be his favorite for life.

After wetting him down start the tick and flea shampoo just below his head on the neck. This way if any 'critters' are trying to run away most will go toward his tail and can be rinsed away instead of invading his face. Shampoo just like a dog making sure to pay special attention to his tummy and vent area. Work the shampoo down the feathers to his skin and make sure you let the shampoo sit for the instructed amount of time to kill the buggies.

The Poly Vi Sol vitamins are an excellent idea. He might be missing something in his diet and this will give him a boost.

Re-introduce him to the flock at night when everyone is roosting and sleepy. They probably won't remember he was gone and in the morning everything should be normal as far as the pecking order.

I saw no mention of diet . Is he by chance eating layer feed and getting too much calcium ?

edt to say : The body stance and missing feathers reminds me of the lowest pecking order roosters of my childhood banties . Almost like they were mimicking a hen to avoid a fight with the other roos , and even many hens drove them away ; they were outcasts untill they were killed or survived long enough to rise in the pecking order .

I was just reading through this thread and on another thread, someone posted a good link to a website to help diagnose poultry diseases. I found that paleness usually means a deficiency of something, such as nutrients, vitamins, etc. Maybe your rooster has a deficiency of something that he's had for a while and it's affecting other things besides his paleness? Just a thought.

Good luck!

He has had his bath. He did love it. Very surprising.
I did have to hold his head up. I filled the sink to about half way up his height and he sat right down in it and closed his eyes. He practically purred.
I found no bugs on him before or after.
But he did enjoy the bath.
He didnt' seem to mind the blow dryer.
He's in the dog crate for the night chomping on an apple.

Yes, he does live with 8 layers, so they are on layer pellets. I have higher protein crumbles in there with it though, Flock Raiser or something, I will have to check the bag. I added it a month or so ago because I added 2 non-laying younger pullets to the flock.

I bought him some vitamins for his water too, so we will see.

I will check into getting stuff to worm all of them since you think that is a possiblity too.

NOne of the diseases sound like what's wrong with him. any other ideas? He does seem very scrawny and light to me. Low body mass. He's a skinny chicken.

As far as being low in the pecking order, yes, that is true. He had 3 maran roosters in there with him (all younger) but they were bigger and he had to stay out of their way. All other roosters are now gone. I dont' think that would have made him no able to fly or jump up more than 1 foot at a time.

appreciate the help folks
