Having grown up on this farm when it was a commercial chicken farm, my SO doesn't have the same take on chicken raising that I do. While he could never hurt any animal, he doesn't exactly coddle them either.
One of my buff hens Brigid is very particular about her egg laying enviroment. She not only wants a certain nest every time, she doesn't want other hens even in the coop when she lays. She uses a loud screeching to try and run the other hens off.
I just put up with it and ignore her, knowing that sooner or later the other hens will finish and leave and she can have the coop all to herself.
My SO has been out around the coop twice when Brigid has started her routine. Each time he goes in and picks her up, plops her down in an empty nest and in a stern voice tells her "Hush up! Sit there and lay your egg!" Brigid immediately shuts up and gets down to laying.
I tried his technique when Brigid got extra loud today. It doesn't work for me.
