I have a chick that is 5 weeks old. The chick is not feathering out like the rest. All the others are almost completely featherd. This one is still coverd in his chick fluff. He barely has pen feathers. I know he won't be able to go out with the others. Will they come in? or is it a problem/disease???? I have given him extra vitamins and they are on medicated chick starter 24% 51 chicks all look normal and are doing great! Just this 1 is behind.

Thanks and God Bless!

What breed / variety?

It could carry the slow feathering gene. If so, it will feather out............. eventually.

Sorry! All JG's All doing great!!!! Just the 1 is still fluffy! He has some pin feathers but they are few and far between. He looks so funny! I will have to get some pics. He may have to be a house pet. LOL I hope my 2 Very Mean cats are affraid of Giants. LOL

Thanks and God Bless!

I had one chick who took a long time to feather. She wasn't a JG, but a black EE. She eventually feathered out and is nice and fat, but she was one funky looking chick.

I had a baby chick just like that in my first batch. I just thought she was a runt. Turned out she was a ROOSTER!!!! He took a long, long time to feather out.

Wow...that is a BIG difference! Is it just the angle of the photo, or are (his?) legs thicker than the others? I'd never heard that some roosters/cockerels take longer to feather out. But if the legs are bigger/thicker, then maybe that's another sign of potential roosterhood???
I'd think as long as the activity level is at par with the others, that (he'll) get there sooner or later (obviously later

), and not worry about it. But yeah, if your weather is still cold, it'll be risky for that one outside now. If you have electricity, you could still put a lamp somewhere in the coop and observe whether the late bloomer is using it a lot or not. Or you could put the rest of the chicks out there, and leave this one and a buddy inside for another 2 weeks or so...???
