Not Meaning to Ruffle Any Feathers, But . . .

Everyone is not interested in posting there business on the internet so there are many good breeders who you will never know about.............jmo

I think that some of the breeds in other countries look better overall. Speckled Sussex is one breed that comes to mind, and some of the Australorps I've seen from Australia make many of the ones I've seen here look rather blah. Of course, there are many good breeders here who do have great stuff too, but it seems like it is more "patchier" here in terms of finding them. Maybe where things originate from there is a better idea of how to keep that breed looking its best, and of course those breeds would be more common there than anywhere else.

From what I've heard, there aren't many big hatcheries in the UK. There are more specialists. This results in not just breeding the chicken to mass produce. JMO.

It all depends where you are looking at the birds in this country. If you are looking in hatcheries, the quality, typey-ness, and conformation will be much different than those same breeds coming from a dedicated breeder. Hatcheries breed in large volume and for egg production, primarily. They don't worry about type, color of feathers or legs, combs, eye color, etc. Breeders that show, do. If showing isn't your thing, that's fine, they are your chickens, but without breeders the chickens tend to lose their breed specific "looks". Just look at a hatchery Rhode Island Red, for example, compared to a breeder's bird. You would not even think they were the same breed! You wouldn't want to buy hatchery Brahmas that only weigh 7 or 8 lbs, when they are supposed to weigh 12-14 lbs. There are plenty of dedicated breeders here on BYC whose birds I dare say, would rival any in the world. Not so much that other countries have better birds, it's just that they have more "breeders" as opposed to huge hatcheries, so the quality is still there. JMO
