My turkey was attacked 2 nights ago, we assume a small bear cub possibly and kind of right time kind of thing. How ever she had to be brought in for healing. She is doing well but today I noticed her neck is very swollen now her injuries are not on her neck bu on her right side where body meets neck and missing ALL tail feathers and one other bald patch on her left side. Could her swollen neck be from a deflated air sac? I have included all photos of her wounds and swollen neck. She is 3 yrs old her name is Gerdie.

Do you have toms? Sometimes they can cause wounds on the sides during mating. I don't what the neck swelling is. It may just be from trauma of some sort. Not sure you can do much except treat the wound with a spray, and keep the flies out. Hopefully she will heal up.

No Tom's. She is my only turkey it happened at night. The gate didn't get shut all the way so we are not sure what tried attacking. Ill get a better picture of her wound it's pretty deep. We have many different predators around.

Generally if a turkey makes it past the first day or two they will heal up. They are pretty good at it. She will keep the wound clean.

I've had raccoons kill turkeys, as well as owls, and hawks.

Yes we were thinking either small bear cub as we have both black and grizzly, a mountain lion kitt or raccoon. I was up alot that night turning lights on alot so thinking it was at the right time because I'm sure she would have been killed. But the shoulder wound looks like claw there are no bite marks.

You have a lot more scary predators than we have. She's lucky to have survived.

Is the swelling in the neck going down a little?
Is she having any respiratory distress?
Can she eat/drink o.k. with the swelling of the neck?

I'd observe for another day or two, likely the swelling is from trauma, hopefully it will resolve as she heals.

I don't have Turkeys, so...

I do read they have 7 air sacs compared to the 9 chickens have, so that's interesting - I learn something new every day.

IF she's having difficulty breathing/signs of respiratory distress, the swelling is getting worse and/or she's unable to eat/drink and the swelling feels like air is indeed trapped under the skin, then it may be necessary to release the air and see how that goes.

She can eat and drink fine. It does feel like air in her neck it has not gone down. She is making some normal turkey noises just not as much as normal. She seems to breath fine. I'd say the neck is larger than it was in the picture I have provided.

If it's increasing in size, then you may want to release the air.
