Crowing at noon
This isn’t my first time at the chicken show, my grands (who I lived with for years) had 22 RIR hens and 1 RIR rooster. But this is my first time as the main caretaker. We currently have 6 standard size chickens and 4 bantams (got them from a friend who’s hen went broody and hatched them all together). Been reading the forums here since before we got the chicks and finally decided to join. Currently I’m building the run and modifying a old travel trailer (with a busted axle) to be the coop. Been doing all this with the help of my trusty farm boy (3 year old toddler) and my 3 Great Heelernees (Heeler/Great Pyrenees mix). I live in sunny Arizona so any advice for hot weather chicken farming is more than welcome.
The first 2 (out of 6) laying boxes we built. They now have ply wood on the sides and back.
The frame of the chicken run it’s 16’ long x8’ wide x6’ high. I’m not much of a construction guy (this is my first structure) so it’s not perfect. Going to install a half door in one of the sections so we can lean in and get their water/step over and get into the run without having to enter the trailer/coop. But that way we can have a solid bottom of hardware cloth without any weak spots where coyotes, snakes, or rodents can enter.
Screwed the boards directly to the trailer into a 2x4 on the inside in case the trailer shifts any (it’s on paver stones with 5 points of contact and has been there for about a year now.)
In the process of redoing one of our guest bedrooms... it is currently or chicken room until I finish the coop and run.
