Not really a gardening question…tree related

Hi. This is not really a gardening question but I think that my fellow gardeners might have some good information for me. I have a magnolia tree in my front yard that was damaged when we moved in. I haven’t cut it down yet because I hate to cut down a tree. It has three branches that are missing on one side. You can see where they were broken off by likely a hurricane or a strong storm. Will the suckers ever turn into branches and make this tree even out or will it always be really thick on one side and bare on the other? Thanks for any tips and advice.

It will grow in new branches over time, but you may want to balance it by taking some from the other side. Magnolia trees are very robust. My mother cut one down right to the soil level and after a couple of years it grew right back up again? Although it is now more of a large bush with multiple leaders (trunks) than a big beautiful tree like it used to be.

I hate to cut a tree down too.

It might be best to call a few reputable tree trimming companies to come assess it and give estimates. I would ask specifically about balancing the tree and encouraging canopy growth. You might glean enough information to tackle the job yourself.

If you haven't already made a decision, you could call your county's agricultural extension office. They usually have someone who is qualified to help you access the best way to remedy the tree. Good luck!
