OK... some of you may remember me from about a year ago. I had yet to get chickens at that point.I had also yet to realize that we lived so far out in BFE that we could not get reliable internet! LOL
In any case... still searching for the internet (thank goodness for public libraries meanwhile!).
BUT...
I DO HAVE CHICKENS!!!!!
We have 6 lovely New Hampshire Reds. We originally picked them due to the following very scientific catagories:
1) They were available at the feed store! LOL
2) They are able to be sexed visually with good reliablity.
3) They are supposed to be a good all purpose breed.
I must say...I highly recommend them for beginners. They are big enough to be ignored by our resident cooper's hawk (thus far anyway). They were purchased in April, laying by September (we had one that was a holdout... the rest started earlier than that), and they give us 5 to 6 eggs a day even now that it is getting into the low 30's many nights.
Now, with the funky spring we had (NEVER thought it would warm up!), we DID have them living in the house for over 9 weeks. And my 15 yo dd held them constantly... but I must say, they are freindly little biddies! A few still try to come in the house to watch TV (Orla, her favorite does so and falls asleep on her lap!). And they will follow us about the yard to see what we are up to and will come when called (pure cupboard love though, they are spoiled with treats! LOL)
Anyway...
I am back, if only as often as I can get to the library (working on that). I SO missed you peeps!
