Not so smart snake...(Pic)

I haven't had any snake problems as of yet but I do have a relocation plan in place. I plan on sending them right to Jesus!

I'm currently also trying to get Jesus a pet raccoon and possum as well! Dang critters!

I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be sitting on the porch with a .22 in the late evenings. Well, at least until my four daughters turned 16 anyway!

I've heard of people putting smaller light bulbs in the nest for snakes to swallow. Then, when they constrict to burst the "egg", the glass shards kill them, eventually. I think its a cruel way to get rid of a pesky snake, but its faster than starving to death from eating a golf ball. I just shoot them if they won't stay away.

When a raccoon got my Buffy (RIP) I stayed up all night with my night vision scope and Co2 pistol waiting. I never saw the 'coon but I did kill 5 rats. That freaked me out too. I really had no Idea.
From then on for about a week It was death and carnage in my back yard Rambo style.
I had live traps and snap rat traps EVERYWHERE and I shot anything that moved. Had to keep the girls in the run until I was sure I got all the traps and poison out.

I did manage to "relocate" three opossum and a teen age skunk. But still no raccoon.

Here's a tip...do NOT shoot a skunk with a pellet gun. (it makes them mad)

I'd welcome a good sized ratsnake or two at my house.

I have raised a lot of snakes as pets, mainly wild ones I caught as a kid. I like them, but will never release them after they start getting in the chicken pens. They will eat chickens! They focus on little ones and eggs, but will occasionally kill an adult and try, even if they fail, to eat it.
I also have never heard of a rat snake deterring the presence of poisonous snakes. King Snakes, as mentioned before, are good snake eaters and will eat poisonous snakes.
Releasing black rat snakes "at the back of the farm" accomplishes nothing. They will come right back unless you have a Texas sized ranch, capable of going several miles from the catch point.

That might be what the original purpose of it was, but they said they put it in there to kill the snakes. I think they had a twinge of conscience when they saw how big and mellow it was, with that big egg in its belly.

I have put wooden eggs in boxes before but never to kill a snake only to help hens who need something in the box. Some of our hens will only lay in someone else's box. I have never heard of golf balls to help them lay. Had a snake in a box just a week ago. Huge thing had already eatten 3 eggs and was going for a fourth one. I do not believe they will deter other snakes as we only have 15 acres and we have all types of snakes even cooper heads, water mocasons(sp?) and rattlers. We are NOT supposed to have rattler's in our area any longer but the game and wildlife guy was sooooo nice to release some in our area because a couple of years ago they released too many turkeys. They are a really big pest around here now eat a garden down to nothing in no time and attacking on coming cars. We had a big SUV and a flock attacked by husband one day driving to town. Tell that to a city insurance adjuster and see how much they believe. It took the adjuster coming out and almost hitting a flock before they believed the damage was caused by a wild turkey flock,,,even with all the feathers still on the grill and windsheild. And opossums will eat your chicks and chickens and eggs they are nasty hissing creatures who carry a good many germs and nasties. The first time my husband had to kill something was a opossum because it was eating his girls! Catching him red handed! My husband hates to kill anything!! If he had to hunt for food he would starve! Snakes in the hen box is not a pleasing site! But 2 is way more than this girl would want to even think about having to remove.......... ps if you noticed I can not spell ...sorryopossum
