Well give you and your birds a chance! We also live in a very suburban area. We have our girls in the back and they have their own fenced in area. I do let them out for a little bit in the early evening to run the yard. Yes, we have poop, but it's not a big deal. We hose of the porch and patio and don't worry about it. I have 3 young kids and no scary diseases yet! They bring all their cooties home with them from school! The chickens are the LEAST of my worries!

Good luck! I hope you are able to move past the "yuck" and enjoy them like I enjoy mine!

I have been known to yell at the top of my wee lungs at a guy at the zoo. He hit an Emu in the head with his fist for trying to take his unprotected popcorn. He was too busy talking to his girl friend and he wasn't paying attention. He had his hand hanging over a very low wall. In his had was a full bag of popcorn. Missy Emu Bonked his popcorn and he spilled it all.
