I took a picture of my barred rock today because I was wondering if her tail feathers were normal. She's a round rump chicken and I didn't think they were supposed that way. When I got them at a day old I was just learning and didn't realize pasty bottom happened in a days time and I had one chick only that would get it pretty bad, and once so bad that around her little bottom was bald. Also, I think the other chickens tended to pick on her and would pluck at her feathers which gave her some bald spots so we named her "Baldy" Well, as you can see once we put them out into the yard from the house containers, she flourished and is so darn cute and certainly not bald. I'm wondering though if this may have been the chick that got pasty and now she won't have feathers that perk up in the back like the rest. Any info would be appreciated. As I said I'm a first timer and although I did lots of reading, I'm still learning.

Hmm! That's cool... I think it's maybe because the other chicks could have pecked the main tail feather folicles out when she was little, so now she can't grow them in! I haven't ever heard of a rumpless Barred Rock (genetically), so either she's a super-rare chicken, or its a little battle scar she happened to aquire! Who knows, it might grow in later! :)

well...I feel so lucky that she made it so I may just tell everyone I have a rare rumpless LOLOL. I for sure think you are right though.

does she have a tail at all? Her feathers may have just been plucked out.
Feel down her spine, if she has a tail, there will be a lump about the size of a grape that is her tail, if she doent, then you will feel a void then her pubic bones.

This is what im talking about, if your not sure, feel some of your other chickens to compare.

Honestly, she doesn't look rumpless to me. Those birds have a different body shape. She just looks like she's missing her tail feathers. Either way, the OP can easily tell by feeling for a tail bone as per the instructions above.
