Not sure if sour crop...

Issue: One of our chickens, a Jersey Giant, has had a very squishy crop for well over a week now. It started when she was broody, and she would occasionally vomit when picked up from the next box and moved, since we were trying to break her. The whole time it had been very, very hot and since she had not been acting distressed or ill otherwise, we had assumed that it was just that she was drinking a lot - some of the other hens also had squishy crops now and then but the next day were always back to hard.

She is no longer broody, but her crop has remained consistently squishy. She is still not acting distressed at all, eats well, is not picked on.. basically she is a normal, happy free-ranging chicken lady. So we're worried about messing with her when she's not acting sick at all.

My concern: If it IS sour crop, and she's had it for this long, will it progress to something worse? Should we try to help her now, or wait to see if she actually gets ill? I worry at the same time that turning her upside down and trying to get her to puke when she isn't ill in the first place could cause aspiration if I don't do it right.. I dunno. She is a sweet girl and I want to head anything off, but avoid hurting her worse. Any wisdom?

Welcome to BYC! Can either of you take your hens to a vet? Crop problems are almost always secondary to something else.
