A friend of mine got some adult hens from some one a few months ago. They all seemed healthy but one of them (leghorn) always seemed to have a swollen abdomen or it just looked like it drooped compared to the other chickens. She was always active, but they weren't sure if she was laying. Yesterday she was very sick laying down not eating so they decided to end her suffering. When they picked her up a green liquid very foul smelling discharge came from her mouth and maybe green diarrhea also. They thought maybe she was egg bound and developed an infection. Didn't know of this could be the case or if it sounded like a disease? They do come to my house and around my chickens sometimes .... I told them I would try to find something out but everything I read about those symptoms isn't definate. None of their other chickens are sick at this point.

It's really hard to say what killed her. If it smelled bad, I would say she had some infection. She may have had sour crop-and something blocking her intestinal tract.

If anyone comes to visit your chickens, and has chickens, you need to think about not letting someone bring illness to your chickens.

I know!! These people r family so it's hard I just try to deter them from going into the coop and runs. Sounds horrible but I am awful protective of my chickens.... They r family too haha.
