Yes a boy. That's way too much comb for 4 weeks.View attachment 1359669 View attachment 1359681 Can you help me with this 4 week old barred rock chick? We purchased several chicks, two of them were barred rock and all were supposed to be female. We suspect this one is male though. You can see the other barred rock chicken just behind it for comparison.
It's not common, but females can have spurs. Most hens just have a tiny nub/bump where a spur would be.Kylo's feet (7-8 week Asian Black)
Are those Spurs?
Because my white rock and mystery chicken have them too....

Does he look to be about 4 weeks though? I'm going off the age they told us at TSC, so I know that may not be super accurate.Yes a boy. That's way too much comb for 4 weeks.

Thank you! That's what I was hoping. All six were supposed to be pullets but after #1 and #2 started crowing I was worried that not only are they roosters but that maybe the rest of them were too!![]()
Female buff orp
They both look female to me. By 8 weeks a male would have a taller comb + dropping wattles +more face color. My guess is one chick got plucked or dropped a few tail feathers along the way. They molt several times before adulthood so the feathering may change slightly. I suppose, depending on where you got them, one could be another breed of big black hen (like an orpington) but probably just a simple case of individual differences.Ok, here we go! Thanks for the input in advance.
I have two 8 week old BJG chicks and they are developing very differently. Especially tail feathers. Here are a few pics of the chicken in question
