Hello everyone this is Davin!
I can't say that I am extremely knowledgeable about chickens but I will say that I love them! Recently I have acquired what I think is a blue laced red Wyandotte. I'm just not sure the age for the gender. When I found the chicken I assumed it was a female and went to our local feed store and got her a couple of silver buff bantams. Within just a few minutes the chicken started mothering them, It was really cool to see. This morning however I heard the chicken make a crowing noise. My question is is this a male or female? And if it were a male wouldn't mother chicks? We live within city limits and it would be a bummer if it was a rooster.

Thank you very much for your time

Wait. I could be wrong......I just noticed the chick hiding in that pic. Could be a mature hen.

Cute right! There are 2 of them, the other is hiding.

I tried to introduce 3 more the other day, different breed, it would NOT have them. It would separate the first 2 and lay right on them.

Thanks for your response.

I figured a Male would not act like a mother. But the crowing thing threw me off. It sounded like a young rooster trying to crow for the first time.

Thank you!
