I have a production RIR that is about 20 months old. She went into her first molt about a month ago. It was a moderately heavy molt (not outside of the norm) and the bare spots have grown back. The problem is that she is still losing some feathers every day and looks pretty raggedy. I brought her inside yesterday due to the extreme cold and she dropped 8-10 feathers overnight.

Her second symptom is that she has either liquid or very soft poo that started with her molt. I attributed it to the molt initially, but now I'm not at all sure.

She is acting perfectly normal- good energy, eating, interacting with the others, etc.

------------

Any thoughts as to what this is? I've never seen a molt like this before. Anything I should check on? Thanks in advance.

Do you have photos of her and her poop?

Some can seem to take a long time to molt - anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks, so she may simply not be finished molting just yet if it's been only about 4-5 weeks or so.

As for the poop...likely it's due to molting too. I've noticed poop can be a bit different or off during molt for some. Often they don't eat as much which seems counterintuitive, but I think they are looking for something different - my molters seem to be keen on dark leafy greens and bits of egg along with their normal feed. Others give theirs some fish (tuna, sardines, mackerel).

Water intake and diet affect poop - if she's drinking/eating and staying active, etc. I would monitor her closely but not worry too much.

Yeah, it may just be a somewhat unusual molt, but I wanted the input. Thanks.
I give the girls fodder (sprouted grain) for greens each day as a replacement for their free-range browsing during the winter and they get 20% all-flock feed, so I'll try giving her some egg/tuna.

I'm attaching a couple of pictures. I've circled some very soft poo from today and you can see feathers scattered around in the wood shavings. Her saddle feather area was bare, but has grown back in. I was mostly just concerned that this has been going on so long.
